Job overview

Specialist Speech and Language therapist

An opportunity has arisen, for a Band 6 Speech and Language Therapist to join the Integrated neuro Therapy team within Croydon Health Services NHS Trust. This is a rotational post across the following areas:

  • Acute adult in patient service
  • Acute Stroke Unit
  • Community Neuro Rehab team
  • Community Stroke Rehab team

The successful candidate will need to demonstrate experience and knowledge in assessment, treatment and management of patients who have acquired communication and swallowing problems, including Stroke and other neurological conditions. Supervision and support will be provided by the Band 7 Speech and language therapists within each rotation. As part of the wider speech and language therapy staffing you would be involved with VF clinics and we have also run a FEES service.

Main duties of the job

To assess, develop and implement Specialist Speech and Language Therapy Treatment.
To write reports reflecting specialist knowledge.
To provide appropriate specialist intervention and evaluate outcomes.

To contribute to interagency/multi-disciplinary team building.
To be aware of, adhere to and implement service and team plans and policies.
To use specialist knowledge to inform service/policy developments as appropriate.

To monitor stock levels in own service area and request new equipment as appropriate.

To be responsible for the security, care and maintenance of equipment ensuring standards of infection
control and safety are maintained – including equipment loaned to clients.

To contribute to clinical teams both multi disciplinary and uni disciplinary by discussing own and others
input around clients needs ensuring a well coordinated care plan.
To communicate complex condition related information from assessment to clients, carers, families and
members of the multi-disciplinary team/other professions.

To work closely with clients, carers and families, agreeing decision making relevant to the patient/client
management.

To manage and prioritise own caseload independently.
To manage and prioritise own workload.

Qualification

Essential criteria
  • Recognised Speech and Language Therapy Degree Qualification or equivalent
  • Registered with HCPC

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of a range of SLT assessment approaches and interventions for adults
  • Understanding of the role of SLT with adults who have neurological conditions

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Completed RCSLT Band 5 competencies
  • Experience working as an SLT with adults with neurological conditions, including stroke
  • Experience working as an SLT within an MDT
Desirable criteria
  • Experience as an Band 6 SLT with adults
  • Experience as an SLT with adults in a variety of settings

Skills and abilities

Essential criteria
  • Identifies what attracts them to this specific post at Croydon Health services Trust
  • Flexible and adaptable to change to meet the needs of the service
  • Competent in management of dysphagia
  • Demonstrates an interest in working with patients with neurological conditions
