Job overview

The post holder will be responsible for the provision of care for patients in the Outpatient Services at Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust Croydon directorate. The post holder will be accountable for the provision of excellent nursing care and work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team. She/he will provide direct line-management of the nurses in the outpatient services. The post holder will work with the matron and the Head of Nursing to support nursing staff and ensure services provided in outpatient services are patient focused, safe and efficient, and always working in a manner that promotes Moorfields Way of working, through the adoption of person centred care principles, and that all care delivered adheres to best practice standards guidance and criterion for ophthalmic nursing. The post holder will also be expected to support the implementation of Moorfields Nursing strategy and will be required to work mainly at the Croydon directorate.

Main duties of the job

  • To work as an expert ophthalmic clinical practitioner, ensuring that staffs have the appropriate skills necessary to care for the designated patient groups.
  • Demonstrate the highest level of ophthalmic nursing practice and specialist advice in the assessment, planning, implementation, evaluation  and discharge of patients.
  • Lead on the provision of evidence based nursing practice.
  • Be responsible for the assessment of care needs, development, implementation and evaluation of high standards of nursing care within the surgical pathway.
  • Be conversant with Trust Policies and guidelines and ensure compliance.
  • Investigate and respond to complaints both written and verbal. Report information and findings back to the nursing teams.
  • Line manage an amalgamated nursing team for both the day surgery pathway and the inpatient pathway.
  • Co-ordinate between day care service at City Road and the satellite units when the need arises.
  • Provide a professional role model to the nursing teams within day surgery, and lead the teams to provide a patient focused service on a daily basis.
  • Promote a positive image of the 6Cs to patients, relatives/carers and other key stakeholders, demonstrating a commitment to putting patients first.
  • Actively promotes the Moorfields Way and be a role model in communicating with stakeholders.
  • Ensure high standards of record keeping in both paper and electronic format, in order to evidence our preparation for CQC inspections and ongoing quality and safety agenda, whilst also making sure compliance is sustained across the clinical areas.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Facilitate a high quality, cost effective specialist service through monitoring, audit and other quality initiatives agreed by the Trust.
  • Lead on and participate in key developments relating to the ophthalmic speciality so that high quality patient focused services are promoted.
  • Organise and participate in team meetings where key directorate agendas are discussed and staff feedbacks are taken on board for quality improvements. 
  • Promote a patient focused multidisciplinary approach to care in collaboration with carers, healthcare professionals and other agencies.
  • Ensure safe discharge of patients in accordance with the trust Discharge Policy.
  • Create an ethos where staff are valued and supported to deliver the best quality of care to patients.
  • To be responsible for managing staffing resources effectively and efficiently, and to manage staff performance in accordance with trust policy.
  • Implement and be actively engaged in competency-based assessments in conjunction with the trust Education Team.
  • Lead in the audit process for monitoring and reviewing nursing quality.
  • To be responsible for implementing, maintaining and monitoring measureable standards of care using agreed tools.
  • Maintain and improve standards of care whilst monitoring the care environment.
  • To be responsible for the needs of the service users in determining short and long term priorities in conjunction with the trust priorities and objectives.

Person specification

Education & Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • NMC Registered General Nurse
  • Recognised qualification in ophthalmology
  • Recognised clinical teaching qualification
  • First level degree or equivalent academic qualification
  • Evidence of Masters level degree learning or prepared to work towards
  • Evidence of continued professional development
  • Advanced communications skills/training or prepared to work towards

Skills & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience teaching others and responding to learning needs
  • Experience of working as a unit leader or charge nurse
  • Understanding of the pathway for ophthalmic day surgery
  • Experience of taking charge and delegating duties
