Job overview

The Report & Dashboard Developer will create high-quality data visualisation products using Microsoft Power BI and Microsoft SQL Server to convey key insights to users across the organisation. Working for Informatics in the Digital Services directorate, this role combines the technical aspects of developing measures and SQL statements with the ability to create data-driven reports from a set of requirements, delivering intuitive reporting solutions that support clinical and operational decision-making. The developer will create comprehensive documentation, provide maintenance support for reporting environments, and collaborate with stakeholders to understand and meet their information needs.

Main duties of the job

Design and Develop Data Visualisations

o   Create high-standard reports and dashboards using modern data visualisation methodologies

o   Develop self-service reporting solutions that meet business needs

o   Implement effective data visualisation techniques to convey complex information clearly

•  Technical Documentation and Support

o   Produce comprehensive documentation including design templates, testing plans, and user guides

o   Create both technical documentation and business user-focused materials

o   Ensure all developments adhere to change control processes with rigorous testing procedures

•  Stakeholder Collaboration

o   Work with Information Business Partners and data engineers to analyse business/care delivery processes

o   Present complex information to diverse stakeholders and address ad-hoc queries

o   Translate technical concepts into accessible solutions for non-technical users

•  System Development and Maintenance 

Participate in projects aligned with key organisational objectives

Maintain and administer reporting environments

Support development of data quality monitoring tools and techniques

•  Analysis and Problem Solving

o   Lead development of reporting from the Trust's data warehouse

o   Apply flexible and innovative approaches to solving complex data challenges

o   Support research and development using specialist research methods

The Informatics Delivery Team forms a critical part of the Trust’s digital information network, consisting of dedicated data analysts and report developers who collaborate closely with the Requirements and Assurance as well as the Data Engineering teams. Based at Jeannette Wallace House in Croydon, the team develops and maintains comprehensive reporting systems for the Trust.

We ensure high-quality data for both internal management and external NHS reporting requirements while working alongside clinicians, service managers, and leadership to understand their needs. Through our technical expertise, we enable the Trust to enhance patient care through data-informed planning and service improvements.

Key Responsibilities:

·    Design and develop high-standard reports and dashboards using modern data visualisation methodologies

·   Create comprehensive technical and user-friendly documentation for reporting solutions

· Participate in projects aligned with organisational objectives, providing recommendations and options

·     Ensure all developments follow change control processes with thorough testing procedures

·   Work with clinicians and service managers to analyse and improve business processes

·  Develop data quality monitoring tools and reporting from the Trust's data warehouse

·        Present complex information to diverse stakeholders and handle ad-hoc queries

·        Support research initiatives using specialist methods

·        Provide customer support and maintain business/supplier relationships

·        Ensure all developments comply with departmental and Trust policies

 

Requirements of the role:

  • Degree level education or equivalent experience in business intelligence/dashboard design

·        Practical knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server and Power BI

·  Experience documenting data management solutions and business analysis techniques

·        Ability to work independently, prioritise effectively, and meet deadlines

·        Flexible and innovative problem-solving approach

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Educated to Degree level or equivalent experience in business intelligence/ designing dashboards
Desirable criteria
  • Postgraduate/ professional qualification in research/ advanced statistics
  • Prince2, Agile or other Project Management qualification

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Practical knowledge in using Microsoft SQL Server and Microsoft Power BI
  • Experience of documenting data management solutions including architectural diagrams, dashboards, extracts, and reports
  • Experience of requirements/ business analysis techniques and change control
Desirable criteria
  • Understanding of ITIL good practice in a work environment
  • Experience of developing complex data transformation using specialist integration tools such as SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS)

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Developing reporting solutions to meet the business needs of the organisation including clinical data quality, performance management and reporting issues
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of mental health services or NHS data models
  • Knowledge of using corporate reporting tools and abstraction layers such as SAP Business Objects, Microsoft SSAS/SSRS
