Job overview

The Oral Health Promotion (OHP) Team is commissioned to work with 9 South London Local Authorities. The post holder will be working to improve the opportunities for oral and general health for individuals and families living in the boroughs of Croydon, Merton, Sutton,. However, there will occasionally be work in the boroughs of Lewisham, Southwark, Lambeth Kingston, Richmond and Wandsworth

Main duties of the job

Duties will involve providing advice to parents, carers, and staff, as well as promoting oral and general health among children and young people in a variety of settings across the community.

The post holder will also assist in fluoride application in schools and supervised tooth brushing training in the early year settings and schools.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Main Duties and Responsibilities

•    Communicate evidence-based oral health advice to local families in settings across the community, using various methods and resources.  This will include displays and arts-based activities.

•    Work in schools to promote oral health, including providing evidence-based classroom activities, delivery of health events, information and advice for parents/carers and supporting school staff to incorporate oral health promotion into everyday practice.

•    Assist in the delivery of Supervised Tooth Brushing and Fluoride Varnishing Application Programmes. 

•    Contribute to developing high-quality innovative oral health promotion activities for use in schools and community settings, designed to meet specific oral health, general health and broader curriculum objectives.

•   The dissemination of materials and resources to local communities

•    Deliver oral health promotion to hard-to-reach and vulnerable groups across the community.

•    Accompany and assist staff in undertaking home visits to parents and carers of children and adults with special needs as part of the Infant Preventative Dentistry Scheme and Adult Preventative Dentistry Scheme.

•    Promote the oral health of older people and provide information and advice for carers and staff teams working with older people.

•    Build links across the community with practitioners and local groups to promote oral health and develop joint working to improve the opportunities for oral health.                      

Person specification

Education & Qualification and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Full registration with the General Dental Council
  • Experience of oral health promotion
  • Demonstrates awareness of the ethical principles of care compassion, dignity, safety, confidentiality and consent
Desirable criteria
  • Post Qualification Level 3 Certificate in Health Promotion or Health Education PTLLS / AET (Award in Education and Training) – for delivering structured sessions CACHE Level 3 Diploma in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools NEBDN Certificate in Oral Health Education NEBDN Certificate in Dental Radiography or Fluoride Application (for added clinical competence)
  • Understanding local health inequalities and the current issues facing dental services in the UK
