Job overview

The South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLAM) Eating Disorders Service provides adult Outpatient and Day Service treatment from the Maudsley Hospital site, where a brand new, purpose designed Day Services unit opened in April 2021.   

This post will provide additional dietetic input for a continuously expanding service.  Working alongside other Band 7 specialist dietitianThe post holder will plan and provide dietetic assessment and treatment for adult service users with a range of eating disorder diagnoses under the care of the Day and Outpatient Services.

The post holder will benefit from the learning and support available from being based within the eating disorders multidisciplinary team and maintain a professional link with the wider SLAM dietetics service. 

Main duties of the job

As a member of the eating disorders Day Services and Outpatient multi-disciplinary teams (MDT) to: 

 Working in conjunction with other band 7 Specialist Dietitians (Outpatient and Day Services), to develop appropriate service standards, care pathways and materials for the dietetics service, and contribute to MDT service development and evaluation 

Carry a complex caseload, using evidence based and client centred principles to assess, plan, implement and evaluate interventions 

Organise and provide supervision and training for junior staff and students 

Provide advice and information to the hospital food service provider, so that the needs of service users are met 

Guide the MDT on the effective implementation of the Trust’s nutrition screening and care planning programme 

Support the service by providing information and training for colleagues

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Working in conjunction with the other Band 7 Specialist Dietitians, plan and provide a responsive and effective dietetic assessment and treatment for service users under the care of the Outpatient and Day Services of the specialist eating disorders service. This will include:  

  • Developing appropriate dietetic pathways integrated into MDT pathways. 

  • Evaluating the dietetics clinical service by setting appropriate standards, planning and collecting clinical and patient experience outcome data, and using these to plan and conduct regular audits of the service. 

  • Working closely with colleagues in administration to manage and prioritise the caseload, and ensure referrals are processed smoothly and efficiently. 

  • Assessing service users by interviewing the service user, and carers if appropriate; using clinical information available from other sources, making and using anthropometric and other clinical measurements, and requesting and interpreting additional clinical tests as appropriate. 

  • Collaborating closely with colleagues to manage medical risk, which may be severe 

  • Based on the assessment information, and the evidence base, working in close. collaboration with the service user to produce care plans for dietetic treatment. using appropriate care pathways when applicable.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • HPC Registered Dietitian
  • Relevant degree
  • Post registration course(s) at master’s level in relevant areas of clinical dietetics
Desirable criteria
  • Higher degree

Experience

Essential criteria
  • At least five years in clinical dietetic practice, including experience in eating disorders and at least two of these clinical areas: mental health, nutrition support, weight management, diabetes
  • Experience in training and supervising students
  • Experience of working with challenging client groups, for example those ambivalent to treatment, or those with communication difficulties
  • Experience of/training in racial awareness/diversity

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Excellent knowledge of general aspects of nutrition and health
  • Excellent knowledge of clinical and nutritional risk in chronic and acute malnutrition
  • Knowledge of the challenges of working in a mental health care environment
  • Knowledge of appropriate professional standards
  • Knowledge of hospital food service
Desirable criteria
  • Research experience

Skills and abilities

Essential criteria
  • Excellent skills in counselling, motivation, behaviour change, negotiation and persuasion in working with clients, colleagues and commercial partners.
  • Relevant cooking and meal planning skills
  • Skills relevant to supporting service users in eating, especially when they are ambivalent or distressed
  • Application of nutrition and dietetics in clinical care
  • Ability to work collaboratively and effectively in multi-disciplinary teams
