They are looking for an enthusiastic, flexible & innovative therapist with a specialism in working with young people aged 10 – 18 years of age with a range of communication,social, emotional & mental health needs.  The role will support Ealing YJS’s aim to achieve positive outcomes for young people on the cusp of the youth justice system with the aim of preventing them from going on to offend.    The role will require the post holder to use their existing experience to work alongside other members of the Multidisciplinary Team including Youth Justice workers, GP, Forensic and Clinical Psychologist, Mental Health Nurse, Social workers and CAMHS.. 

In this role you will deliver Highly Specialist Speech & Language assessment for young people known to the Youth Justice Service to inform them, their families/carers & the people around them of any identified communication difficulties. You will then provide appropriate training, therapy, advice & support to the young person & their family/carers, working alongside a range of other professionals.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be expected to be:

Open minded and able to remain professional and calm in difficult, high pressure situations.

Able to show compassion and care towards young people with complex needs who may have difficulties accepting support.

Interested in developing clinical skills and knowledge working with vulnerable young people and their families.

Experienced working with young people between 10-18 years of age e.g. in current role/through previous student placements.

Able to build rapport with young people, families and professionals quickly.

Flexible. This post may require flexible use of the 7.5 hours (e.g. 10:00 – 18:00)

Able to carry out tailored assessments and provide follow up interventions (indirect and direct) when required, for young people referred to the service.

Organised and willing to learn.

This exciting post will provide the opportunity to develop both your clinical and leadership skills with opportunities to provide expert advice, second opinions & be part of developing the expertise of the team.  As part of Ealing Services for Children with Additional Needs (ESCAN) the post will also involve regular collaborative working with other professionals.

Main Responsibilities

This post involves: -

  • Providing assessment of speech, language and communication skills to young people within the YJS.
  • Providing appropriate specialist intervention where required and evaluate outcomes within the YJS
  • Making appropriate onward referrals
  • Working as part of MDT to facilitate support and therapy programmes
  • Developing clear packages of care based on best practice
  • To be able to reflect on aspects of a young person’s communication and identify appropriate strategies to facilitate and enhance communicative effectiveness, monitor the effectiveness of speech and language therapy programmes/strategies/advice being delivered by other relevant professionals/parents and adjust as necessary

Education and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • • Recognised Speech and Language Therapy degree qualification or equivalent
  • • Registration with Health Professions Council as a speech and language therapist
  • • Registered member of RCSLT
  • • Evidence of continuing professional development and advanced training in specialist area
Desirable criteria
  • Member of national organisation / CEN related to primary SLCN

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of working with children and young people as a therapist
  • In-depth knowledge of assessment tools, and experience of using them relevant to school aged children with SLCN.
  • Knowledge of national policies and procedures relevant to school aged children with SLCN.
  • Good knowledge of the SEND procedures
  • In-depth knowledge of a range of appropriate therapy approaches/strategies, and experience in using them with school aged children and young people with SLCN particularly including: ASD, learning difficulties, language difficulties, speech difficulties, stammering
  • Knowledge of the principles of clinical governance
  • Experience of contributing to an audit
  • Good knowledge of the roles of other professionals relevant to school aged children and young people with SLCN
  • Good knowledge of standards of record keeping
  • Experience of working with children and young people as a therapist
  • Experience of delivering training
  • Experience of providing informal support to less experience colleagues
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of leading on a project to improve/develop the service
  • Experience of providing formal support to less experienced colleagues
