The North London Forensic Service has an exciting position available for an enthusiastic and motivated consultant psychiatrist to join the existing substantive consultant psychiatrists within the well-established Specialist Community Forensic Team (SCFT) team and a Low Secure Rehabilitation unit.

The successful applicant will join the wider team of consultant psychiatrists within the North London Forensic Service- a large and successful forensic psychiatric service in the North London Forensic Collaborative, with its secure care services being deemed ‘Outstanding’ by the CQC.

 

Main duties of the job

This post is for Consultant Psychiatrist within the North London Forensic Service, North London NHS Foundation Trust. The role is split between providing consultant leadership to the male low secure rehabilitation ward (the ward caseload of 24 patients is split in half with the existing Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist in post) and to the Specialist Community Forensic Team which has existing substantive consultants in post. The SCFT part of the post is an established post with locum consultant forensic psychiatrist (0.5PA for a caseload of 30 patients).

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

On Avesbury House, a low secure rehabilitation ward, you will be part of a forward-thinking multidisciplinary team, delivering high-quality care to complex patients and driving recovery-focused outcomes. This is a fantastic opportunity to shape clinical practice and support the recovery journey of our patients.

The Specialist Community Forensic Team covers the five London boroughs of Camden, Islington, Barnet, Enfield, and Haringey, providing both assertive pre-discharge (transition management) and high levels of multi-disciplinary community forensic after-care for unrestricted patients discharged from secure care. The successful applicant will have responsibility for providing consultant leadership to these well organised teams in the delivery of high-quality patient care to service users. The post holder will find themselves well supported, with ample opportunities for ongoing professional development and collaborative working within the North London Forensic Service in North London NHS Foundation Trust. 

  •  To provide clinical leadership to ensure the delivery of high-quality patient care to service users in Avesbury House and the SCFT.
  •    To provide psychiatric assessment and treatment of forensic psychiatric inpatients and as part of the SCFT. 
  • To take on the role of Responsible Clinician for detained patients. 
  •    To produce reports First Tier Tribunals, Hospital Managers hearings, and Criminal Justice System were required. 
  •   To take the lead on prescribing and risk assessments. 
  •  To participate and lead weekly ward rounds on Avesbury House.
  •  To produce reports for CQC Tribunals, Hospital Managers hearings and Criminal Justice System where required.  
  •     Liaison with Courts, prisons, Ministry of Justice, MAPPA (Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements), General Adult Psychiatric Services and adjunct services.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MBBS or equivalent qualification
Desirable criteria
  • Qualifications or higher degree in medical education, clinical research or management
  • Additional degree or equivalent

Eligibility

Essential criteria
  • Full Registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) with a current licence to practise from the GMC at intended start date
  • Included on the GMC Specialist Register OR within six months
  • Approved clinician status OR able to achieve within 3 months of appointment
  • Section 12 Approved or able to achieve within three months of appointment
Desirable criteria
  • In good standing with GMC with respect to warning and conditions on practice

Transport

Essential criteria
  • Holds and will use valid UK driving licence OR provides evidence of proposed alternative

  • Excellent knowledge in specialty
