Job overview

The clinical practice educator will work collaboratively with the theatre team leaders within the department to deliver effective, high quality, safe patient centered care. She/he will lead the continuing education, training and professional development for all theatre staff to promote the acquisition of new skills and knowledge. She/he will develop and drive forward an education program to ensure that all theatre staff acquire the professional standards and competencies when caring for people.

Main duties of the job

The clinical practice educator will:

Ensure that mandatory training requirements are fulfilled, and that staff education and development is aligned to staff appraisal and corporate, divisional, departmental and service development needs.
 Carry out the yearly training needs analysis and agree educational funding applications in
conjunction with the education lead and theatre matrons and coordinate student applications.
 Develop guidelines and policies and undertake audits and reviews within the clinical area.
 Demonstrate clinical leadership and act as a role model at all times.
 In collaboration with other members of the education team, to plan, develop and implement education and training programs of the department
 To develop and run the Band 6 development programme
 To manage the junior members of the team

Essential criteria
  • Registered nurse/ODP
  • Theatre qualifications, ENB 176/ENB 182
  • Mentorship qualifications ENB 998, D32, D33
  • Evidence of continuing professional development

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant and demonstrable experience in theatre practice
  • Experience in managing staff including appraisals, performance, absence, selection and recruitment
  • Budgetary experience particularly in staff and consumable cost
  • Experience in service development and support in change management

Skills and aptitudes

Essential criteria
  • Good written, numeracy and verbal skills
  • Computer skills to include cerner IT system
  • Awareness of clinical issues within the department
  • Able to work as part of a team with negotiation skills to be able to influence staff at all levels
  • Ability to work under pressure in a dynamic environment and manage difficult situations
