Job overview
Applications are invited for a specialist kidney cancer surgeon to join the Specialist Centre for Kidney Cancer at the Royal Free. The successful applicant will be an experienced urological surgeon with a track record of excellence in kidney surgery, service development, research and education.
This 10 PA post will work with the multidisciplinary team to provide specialist expertise in the management of kidney cancer patients.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will have the following duties:
- Clinical expertise within the kidney cancer specialist centre, including mentoring of trainees and line management of surgical care practitioners
- Surgical leadership and direction for the kidney cancer network across local centres within North Central and North East London Cancer Alliances.
- Maintenance and development of system-wide collaborative working for both clinical and academic aspects of kidney cancer
- Delivery of high-quality clinical outcomes for kidney cancer treatment across the system, including robotic, laparoscopic and open surgery
- Development of information systems to assess and report on key kidney cancer clinical outcomes
- Development of optimal relationships with the academic leadership at UCL, Royal Free and UCLH
- Harmonisation of referral pathways and protocols across the system
- Implementation of effective multidisciplinary kidney cancer meetings across the system
- Active contribution to suitable clinical trials with equity of access for patients across the system

Education & Professional Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Possession of MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
- Eligible for GMC registration
- Eligible for admission to the specialist register in Urology
- Membership of relevant Royal College or equivalent
- FRCS(Urol) or equivalent
Skills & Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Subspecialist expertise in renal surgery, including open radical nephrectomy, open partial nephrectomy, robotic assisted laparoscopic radical nephrectomy and partial nephrectomy, conventional laparoscopic renal surgery
- Experience in multidisciplinary cancer care
- Track record in conducting prospective audit and utilising the results to inform service development
- Strong teaching skills and experience
- Ability to supervise the clinical work of other staff
- Ability to work as part of a team and willingness to be personally accountable for actions
- Authority and decision-making skills needed to lead a multidisciplinary team in a complex environment
- Strong oral and written communications skills in English
- Ability to relate to patients from a wide range of backgrounds and to empathise with their needs and concerns
- Ability to communicate effectively with patients, the public and colleagues and treat others with compassion, dignity and respect, taking into account any diversity issues
- Willingness and skills to recognise and challenge unacceptable behaviour and if necessary escalate
