Job overview

The post holder will work under the direction of the ward sister/ charge nurse
with responsibility for:
The assessment of care needs for all patients, ensuring appropriately planned
care is both implemented and evaluated.
He/ she is expected to work with minimal supervision and will be designated to
take charge of the unit on a regular basis.
He/ she will act as an effective clinical leader and will ensure the clinical and
professional development of all staff for whom they are responsible.
Circumstances may arise for the post holder to assist in providing clinical cover
in all areas of the paediatric unit.

Main duties of the job

 The post holder will be expected to liaise appropriately with all key members of the multi-disciplinary team and service users related to the speciality.

  To be responsible for all aspects of patient care including the assessment, planning, delivery and evaluation of direct patient care.

  To take the lead on delegated responsibilities as defined by the Senior Sister/Charge Nurse.

  To support the Charge Nurse/Senior Sister to monitor the safety and quality of care for patients.

  In the absence of the Senior Sister/Charge Nurse to be responsible for the day-to-day management of the ward.

  To manage a delegated group of Band 5 staff ensuring compliance of mandatory training and appraisal requirements.

  To ensure a positive focused service incorporating patients’ feedback to maintain and improve patient care.

  To act as an effective role model promoting excellence through practice.

  • Experience or risk management / clinical governance / policy and procedure development
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of teaching.
