Homerton Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a dedicated Locum Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynaecology with a specialist interest in early pregnancy and acute gynaecology. This full-time post offers the opportunity to join a supportive and forward-thinking multidisciplinary team delivering high-quality care to a diverse population. The role is designed to strengthen consultant presence across key services, enhance urgent hysteroscopy access, and support a busy Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit, ensuring timely and effective patient care.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will provide expert clinical care across early pregnancy, acute gynaecology, and emergency services, including out-of-hours cover. Responsibilities include managing complex cases, contributing to delivery suite support, supervising junior medical staff, and actively participating in teaching, training, audit, and quality improvement initiatives. The postholder will also play a key role in service development, clinical governance, and improving patient experience while working collaboratively with senior clinical and management teams.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • On GMC’s specialist register or a Specialist Registrar who is within 6 months of being admitted to the GMC’s specialist register by date of interview
Desirable criteria
  • Other higher degree or diploma (e.g., MD, PhD)
  • Subspeciality Training in EPAU and acute gynaecology

Relevant experience in specialty/subspecialty

Essential criteria
  • Clinical training in high-risk obstetrics
  • Clinical training in the prevention of preterm births including ultrasound skills to measure cervical lengths
Desirable criteria
  • Acute gynaecology SITM

Clinical skills

Essential criteria
  • Able to deal with Emergency Gynaecology cases
  • Delivery Suite skills in a high risk setting

Leadership & Professionalism

Essential criteria
  • Ability to participate in the strategic development of the Women’s Health services
  • Understanding the need for and practicing accurate and prompt medical record keeping and the completing of patient follow up actions.
  • Empathetic approach both with patients and staff Ability to conduct difficult conversations
Desirable criteria
  • Familiar with current national initiatives particularly in relation to women’s health

Management skills

Essential criteria
  • Understanding the need for and practicing accurate activity recording and clinical coding
  • Manage own workload – self-starter, work with autonomy, able to prioritise and also to know when to escalate concerns and ask for help
  • Establishing and maintaining audits
Desirable criteria
  • Leading on a project or a change programme

Teaching & training

Essential criteria
  • Experience of undergraduate and post-graduate teaching
  • HEE accredited educational supervisors’ course
