Join our dynamic Respiratory Physiology and Sleep Service as an Advanced Specialist Physiologist (Band 8a) and take the next step in your leadership career.
This is an exciting opportunity to act as Deputy Lead for a forward-thinking team, playing a key role in shaping and delivering a high-quality, patient-centred service. You will support the day-to-day operational management of the department, driving performance, innovation, and excellence in care.
You will use your advanced clinical expertise to independently perform, interpret, and report on a wide range of basic and complex respiratory and sleep investigations, directly influencing patient diagnosis and treatment.
Working closely with the Head of Respiratory Physiology, you will help ensure the smooth running of the service while meeting key targets and maintaining outstanding clinical standards.
You will also lead and inspire junior staff through effective line management, including recruitment, development, and performance support, helping to build a skilled and motivated team.
This role is ideal for an ambitious and experienced physiologist ready to take on a senior leadership position, with the opportunity to make a real impact on service development and patient care.
Main duties of the job
Provide basic and complex lung function investigations. Provide expert knowledge in a highly specialist clinical area and personally carry out a broad range of respiratory clinical physiology procedures
Produce technically satisfactory results in accordance with local health and safety policy that will be used in the patient’s subsequent management.
This includes:- Full competence in the following tests:
Lung Function Tests: Spirometry, Body plethysmography; Capillary Blood Gases; 6 min walk; bronchial provocation studies, FeNO, exercise induced asthma study, pulse oximetry
Sleep polysomongraphy (including reporting) as in-pt and home; provision of CPAP (currently stands at over 120 pts); respiratory muscle weakness assessment, fit to fly assessment
Managing CPAP clinic and follow-up.

Essential criteria
- BSc (Hons) in Respiratory physiology or equivalent
- ARTP accreditation
- Registration with RCCP.
- Educated to Masters Level or equivalent experience
Skills/ Abilities
Essential criteria
- Ability to analyse and interpret complex lung function tests
- Leadership skills
- Ability to deal sensitively and courteously with patients, visitors and staff
Experience
Essential criteria
- Extensive post registration experience in a band 7 role within the respiratory physiology.
- Extensive experience at highly specialist level.
- Substantial experience of basic and complex lung function tests
- Experience of providing and reporting sleep studies
- Experience of managing staff (over 5) including performance management
