Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for highly motivated and committed Band 3 Health Care Assistants to join the Theatres and Emergency Department teams at King George Hospital (KGH).

King George Hospital Theatres is proud to be one of only eight Trusts across the NHS recognised as an established Surgical Elective Hub. We offer pioneering, cutting-edge technology, including Da Vinci robotic systems for General, Colorectal, Upper GI, Urology, and Gynaecology surgeries, as well as a Stryker Orthopaedic robot for joint replacement surgeries. Our theatres complex features nine state-of-the-art operating rooms.

We are looking for enthusiastic and motivated individuals to work within our busy and fast-paced Emergency Department. The role is critical in supporting the initial assessment and ongoing care of patients attending the ED and requires excellent communication skills and experience working in an acute healthcare setting.

As a Band 3 Health Care Assistant, your role will include:

  • Assisting Theatre and Emergency Department teams to deliver high-quality, compassionate, and holistic patient care.
  • Supporting patient preparation and equipment management in theatres.
  • Providing critical support in the Emergency Department, including the use of clinical skills such as Venepuncture, Cannulation, ECG recording, etc
  • Assisting with personal hygiene, nutritional needs, and other essential care requirements as they arise.

You will be required to be fully flexible to do shift work that includes day shifts, night shifts, weekends and bank holidays:

• Day shifts (07:30 am until 20:00 )

• Night shifts (19:30 until 08:00 am)

• These will be Monday to Sunday (including Bank Holidays).

You are asked to carefully read the advert and Job Description before completing the application form. A minimum of 2 years’ experience as a Health Care Assistant in a nursing home, care home, or hospital setting is essential for this role. This experience must demonstrate your ability to provide patient care, assist with hygiene needs, support nutritional requirements, and address a wide range of healthcare responsibilities under the guidance of qualified professionals.

In line with UKVI guidelines and due to current financial constraints, BHRUT is unable to provide a Certificate of Sponsorship for Band 2 or Band 3 positions.

PLEASE NOTE: This vacancy will be closed as soon as we received a suitable number of applicants; therefore, please apply as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.

Unfortunately, due to the large number of applications that the Trust receives for some posts, it is not possible to reply to every unsuccessful application.

If you have not received a response within 3 weeks of the closing date of an advert, please assume that your application has been unsuccessful.

Main duties of the job

The postholder will contribute to the delivery of safe, effective, and compassionate care by undertaking delegated clinical duties, supporting patients, and working collaboratively within the multidisciplinary team.

  • Deliver safe, high-quality clinical and personal care by undertaking delegated tasks in line with training, competency, and trust policies.
  • Accurately monitor, record, and report patient observations, promptly escalating any concerns to the registered nurse or appropriate team member.
  • Communicate effectively and empathetically with patients, families, and colleagues to support patient-centred care and ensure clear information sharing.
  • Support a safe, clean, and well-organized clinical environment by adhering to infection control measures and assisting with stock management and equipment checks.
  • Actively participate in ongoing learning and development, attending training sessions, supervision, and competency assessments to maintain and enhance practice.

Working for our organisation

Under the leadership of our Chair Jacqui Smith and Matthew Trainer, our Chief Executive, we provide care for the residents of three of the most diverse London boroughs. More than half of our 7,500 strong workforce are from black, Asian and minority ethnic groups and most live in Barking and Dagenham, Havering and Redbridge. We also provide healthcare services to people in south west Essex, and specialist neurosciences services to the whole of the county.

Our services include all the major specialties of large acute hospitals, operating from two main sites - King George Hospital in Goodmayes and Queen’s Hospital in Romford. We also provide outpatient services at Brentwood Community Hospital, Barking Hospital, Loxford Polyclinic, and Harold Wood Polyclinic. We have two of the busiest emergency departments in London.

As we recover from Covid-19, we’re proud to be leading the way nationally in reducing the time our patients wait to get the treatment they need. The pandemic provided the drive for our teams to innovate and change.

We know we have more work to do to improve waiting times for urgent and emergency care, and our performance against the four-hour emergency access standard remains challenged, in comparison to many other London trusts.

We are particularly proud of our regional Neurosciences Centre; Radiotherapy Centre; Hyper Acute Stroke Unit; and dedicated breast care service at King George Hospital. We’re also pleased to be part of the NEL Cancer Alliance.
