Job overview

We are looking for a Band 4 Dental Nurse to work in our Oral Surgery specialist clinic, based in our Outpatients Department at West Middlesex University hospital, for 3 days a week (Tuesday 0830-1700) Wednesday (0830-1700) and Thursday (0900-1700).

We are a very busy department that functions Monday to Friday 0830 to 1700 and we require caring, self-motivated and confident staff to support the service. Applicants must be a Registered Dental nurse with experience of caring for patients within this speciality.

The post will facilitate an opportunity to apply existing knowledge and skills and develop these further by caring for patients with varied oral conditions.

An essential requirement to this post is the ability to communicate effectively within a multi disciplinary team and with a diverse local population. We aim to continually improve the patient experience throughout our Outpatients Department and can only do this if, staff communicate appropriately with all patients, carers and visitors.

Main duties of the job

The post holder is responsible for delivering high standards of patient care within the Oral Surgery Department and providing services in accordance with the Trusts values and behaviours to support the nursing team in delivery  patient care which is safe and effective.

To perform clinical and chairside duties.

  • To maintain high standards of patient care and ensure patient dignity and       To assist in the correct labelling and dispatch of tissue sections and mediums for specimens to appropriate laboratories.
  • Participate under the direction and supervision of OPD Senior nursing staff and medical staff
  • To take part in the programme of care and maintenance of equipment; keeping records of all servicing and maintenance, with support/guidance of the Senior Dental nurse
  • To participate in the disinfection, sterilisation of equipment as required.
  • To prepare trolleys for minor oral surgical procedures.
  • To assist in minor oral surgery procedures to include monitoring and aftercare of patients.
  • To deputise as required in the organising and assisting of joint clinics.
  • To adhere to departmental and Trust policies on infection control, radiography and Health & Safety
  • Participate under the direction and supervision of senior nursing staff and medical staff in the education of patients and their families / carers regarding aspects of their care

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

COMMUNICATION

  • To act at all times in a courteous and helpful manner to patients and their families, colleagues and all visitors to the hospital.
  • To ensure the patient’s confidentiality is maintained at all times.
  • To complete appropriate documentation and report, verbally, relevant information of work undertaken, to the Senior Dental nurse.
  • Maintain effective, accurate communication and dissemination of information to all staff, patients and visitors.
  • Give information to patients; including helping resolve their queries with colleagues and other health care professionals as appropriate
  • Give information and written advice to patients regarding health promotion
  • Communicate with other members of the multi-disciplinary team to ensure patients receive prompt, effective care and treatment.
  • Maintain accurate written records of all procedures in the designated clinical area.

PERSONAL AND PEOPLE DEVELOPMENT

  • Attend and keep a record of Trust statutory and mandatory training
  • Attend annual PDRs/appraisals and identify own training and development needs with the Senior dental nurse
  • Keep up to date with clinical developments
  • Participate in the welcome and orientation of visitors to the outpatients department, for example, Student nurses, temporary nurses and visiting medical staff.
  • Participate in the induction of new and bank staff to the Outpatients Department and sign the relevant competency form.
  • Participate in the training and supervision of Student dental nurses, temporary nurses, if required.

HEALTH SAFETY AND SECURITY

  • ·         Ensure the safety of patients at all times.

SERVICE IMPROVEMENT

  • To participate in the development and improvement of the Oral Surgery Department within the Outpatients Department.

QUALITY

  • To bring to the attention of the Senior Dental nurse any aspects of the work in the clinics that impact on the quality of service, including care of patients information/data
  • Respond to incidents and complaints as they arise and report to the Senior Dental nurse.
  • Contribute to the Outpatients clinical and non-clinical risk management by documenting incidents and near misses, using trust incident reporting system called Datix.
  • Maintain a tidy, clean and safe environment. Follow hospital guidelines and policies with regards to infection control and health & safety. Ensuring equipment is cleaned and stored correctly and adhere to infection control policy. Keeping up to date on West Middlesex hospital’s policies and procedures using the intranet.
