Job overview
The post holder works under indirect supervision of the Paediatric Outpatient Ward Manager and undertakes task and duties delegated by team leader or a suitably qualified, regulated professional. They will work collaboratively with the Multidisciplinary team to meet the needs of patients, following policy and procedures while providing supervision to more junior staff across paediatrics.
Main duties of the job
- To pro-actively participate in the planning, assessing, implementation and evaluation of patient care as part of the multi-disciplinary team throughout the patient pathway using research based practice.
- To deliver care in accordance with the Trust’s and paediatric departments policies and protocols. To be aware of the organizational and nursing strategy
- To ensure child protection and safeguarding issues are acted upon promptly and appropriately
- Work autonomously and with others to always deliver high standards of care to patients and their careers, autonomously and as part of a team.
- Communicate in accordance with Trust values, to patients, carers and staff at all times.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Clinical
- Patient observations including blood pressure, oxygen saturations, heart rate, respirations, temperature, pain score, NEWS score & escalation
- Peripheral Cannula removal
- Swabbing to include MRSA, FLU, COVID
- Obtain samples including urine dip, from a catheter, MSU and faeces, sputum
- Blood glucose and ketone testing
- ECG recording
- Observe wounds and change simple dressings using asceptic/non touch technique
- Skin assessment
- Urinalysis and pregnancy testing
- Undertaking quality assurance checks of machines used for point of care testing
- Prioritise workload and organises and carries out work that promotes quality

Essential criteria
- NVQ 3 or equivalent level of experience
Desirable criteria
- Certification venepuncture or willingness to work towards
Experience
Essential criteria
- Working within a multidisciplinary team
- Ability to understand venepuncture procedures. Understand and take corrective action in case off an untoward event
- Experience of establishing effective communication
Skills and knowledge
Essential criteria
- Ability to work within a team
- Good knowledge of infection control measures
- Working knowledge of Health & Safety issues in healthcare
