Job overview

We are looking for an experienced Nurse to join our team as a Band 7 Nurse Practitioner in HIV working in Kobler Outpatients.

We are looking for someone who is motivated, enthusiastic and who possesses excellent interpersonal and communication skills along with the ability to work effectively and provide leadership in the multidisciplinary team across an innovative HIV service.

You will be part of a friendly, dynamic and supportive team and will need to be a self-motivated and clinically-experienced adult nurse, with a passion for research and innovation and extensive experience of working in the area of HIV and sexual health.

Main duties of the job

·       The HIV NP will work as a self-directed independent practitioner managing a defined caseload of patients with complex needs for regular follow-up care and treatment, providing care which focuses on enabling patients to optimise their health.

Dependant on their experience the NP may also provide Sexual Health and Contraceptive care to patients in John Hunter clinic as part of an agreed Job Plan.

They will be a role model for expert clinical care, and lead on specific research projects / management functions as agreed with the clinic leads.

The NP will inform the strategic direction of the HIV Directorate regarding the continued development of nurse led HIV care. They will coordinate effective communication across the multi professional team, between departments and the community.

The NP will support the nursing team to complete competency-based training programmes appropriate to their level.

The  NP promotes excellence in nursing practice through the integration of expert clinical practice, education, consultancy, acting as a resource, developing practice and commitment to research and audit.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical

 

·         To use advanced sexual health/HIV knowledge and skills to independently manage total episodes of care within their own scope of professional practice.

·         To be able to manage Safeguarding issues in clinic and making appropriate follow up/referrals as necessary

·         Provide clinical guidance and specialist advice to the nursing team and act as a role model for advanced practice

·         To supply and administer medicines under the Patient Group Directions or as a Non-Medical Prescriber (NMP) for both sexual health/HIV and contraception patient’s

·         Contribute to evidence based practice and research projects within the clinical areas and ensure that written standards for clinical care are formulated, utilised and reviewed regularly and as necessary

·         Collaborate with the Lead Nurses appropriately for professional support and guidance

·         To develop in collaboration with the Lead Nurses , Advanced Nurse Practitioners (ANP’s) and Clinic Manager ,guidelines and protocols relevant to sexual health/HIV and contraception

·         Have a commitment to the development and implementation of sexual health/HIV and contraception initiatives both within the clinic and the community

·         Promote good practice and adopt a holistic approach to patient care at all times

·         Lead on the development of service and innovations in practice with an emphasis on targeting high risk, hard to reach groups and the development of outreach projects

·         Seek opportunities to establish collaborative working relationships with the relevant primary care and community groups and other stakeholders

·         Set personal and professional objectives jointly with the Clinic Manager and Lead Nurses

·         Alongside the Clinic Manager work on the nursing involvement in governance within the clinic and actively participate in the work generated by the Directorate Clinical Governance Committee

Actively participate in audit, research and the evaluation of advanced practice roles, nursing care and practice, in collaboration with the Lead NurseAlongside the Clinic Manager take an active part on quality initiatives in line with clinical governance in the clinic through the implementation of relevant benchmarks, the development of Sexual Health nursing roles.                                           

Person specification

Education and qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered Nurse
  • Successfully completed teaching/assessing course
  • Evidence of comprehensive professional development
  • Relevant specialist courses/training including a recognised Family Planning qualification (DFSRH)
  • BSc Degree
Desirable criteria
  • LOC in IUD/SDI
  • Non Medical Prescriber or willingness to undertake Non-Medical Prescribing course
  • Evidence of further professional development /training relevant to the speciality

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Extensive Sexual Health experience including managing symptomatic male and female patients for total episodes of care ,treatment and follow up.
  • Experience of managing total episodes of care for those patients requiring contraception
  • Willingness to undertake advanced contraception training i.e. Long Acting Reversible Contraception (LARC)
  • Participated in clinical audit and research
  • Evidence of effective teaching and assessing
  • Evidence of working with staff from different professional disciplines
  • Experience of utilising evidence in practice
  • Experience in managing Safeguarding issues in clinic and making appropriate follow up/referrals as necessary
  • Experience of providing leadership in a clinical team
  • Experience of managing staff including ER issues (Abscence,PDR,Performance)
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in service development
  • Experience of working in outreach services and with hard to reach populations groups including Young People, Commercial Sex Workers ,socially excluded and homeless people

Skills and knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrates in depth knowledge of Sexual Health,Contraception and HIV information and guidelines that underpin evidenced based care.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills; ability to listen; ability to organise conflicting priorities and work on own initiative
  • Able to perform sexual history taking and examination in accordance with local and Trust guidelines
  • Advanced clinical practice in the treatment and assessment of patients in the specialty
  • Ability to utilise Patient Group Directions for supply and administration of medication
  • Teaching and Training experience
  • Experience of supporting and developing MDT colleagues including junior staff and students.
  • Excellent standards of written/verbal communication
  • Ability to work efficiently under pressure, good time management,able to manage competing priorities and an unpredictable workload
