Post and Specialty:

Inpatient Consultant Psychiatrist in Older Adults, for functional and dementia care.

This is funded as a 10 to 12PA position. It has been available for some time and is covered by a locum.  It is a 10 Programmed Activities (PAs) post with 7.5 Direct Clinical Contact activities (DCC) and 2.5 Supporting Professional Activities (SPAs).  There is an option to add additional PAs to offer an opportunity of adding a special interest day or further SPAs to the job plan and increasing the total to 12 PAs.

The appointee will have clinical responsibility for the care of acute elderly male and female inpatients primarily from Waltham Forest, but also Redbridge, Havering and barking and Dagenham on Woodbury Unit.

The purpose of this job description is to outline the level of responsibility and accountability of this post. This will ensure that all work undertaken by our staff is clearly identified and carried out under clear lines of accountability.

Main duties of the job

On-call responsibilities:

The postholder will be part of the Senior Psychiatrist on-call rota covering out of hours for Mental Health Services in NELFT. The on-call covers Adult and Older Adult services. This is currently a 1:50 rota with a 3% Category A salary supplement. The Trust also has a Daytime (9am-5pm) Section 136 rota with an approximate frequency of 1 day every 3 months, with all Section 12 approved doctors expected to take a lead on emergency Mental Health Act assessments in the Section 136 suite on the Goodmayes site

 

Working for our organisation

 The post holder will be committed to establishing a culture of care and collaborative working on the unit. You will work as part of a multidisciplinary team and provide direct input to clinical cases. You will be expected to provide clinical leadership and supervision to the team, work directly with older adult male and female patients and their families and liaise as appropriate with community older adult consultant psychiatrists. You will also develop the links with our acute Trust A&E departments and geriatric services to continually improve our services.

 Woodbury ward is a 21 bedded mixed ward for men and women who meet frailty criteria and have functional or organic mental health needs. The ward has a ward manager and shares a matron with the other older adult wards in NELFT (on the Goodmayes site). There is also occupational therapy, psychology, physiotherapy input onto the ward. 

 

 

 

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Training & Supervision:

  • To act as clinical supervisor to the doctors working on the unit, providing effective education, facilitating their development, and promoting high standards of medical care.
  • To ensure own continued professional development and support a culture of lifelong learning.
  • To undertake a regular appraisal and develop a personal development plan.
  • To support new staff and their integration within the team.
  • To support training across the team including opportunities for professional development and implementation of new policies and guidelines.

Education:

  • To provide in-service training and teaching to Medical Students, Trainee Doctors and Resident Doctors, and other members of the multidisciplinary team.
  • To engage in the weekly Academic Teaching Programme.

Administration:

  • To undertake the administrative duties associated with the care of patients and record clinical activity accurately, comprehensively and promptly.
  • The post holder will be expected to have good IT skills and to use the Trust’s electronic case record system.

 

 

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Inclusion in, or eligibility for inclusion in the Specialist Register for Psychiatry or within 6 months of obtaining CCT •
  • Approved Clinician status, or eligibility for it.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • • Mastery in the management of a broad range of mental disorders in older adults
  • • Experience in managing patients from different cultural backgrounds.
  • • Working with interpreters and translators

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • • Extensive knowledge of the biological, psychological, and social determinants of mental health disorders and evidence-based treatment interventions.
  • • An understanding of leadership and evidence of how this has been put into practice.

Clinical Skills

Essential criteria
  • Excellent clinical skills
  • Excellent communication skills both verbally and written
