Band 6 Junior Sister / Junior Charge Nurse Cancer Inpatient Wards (Haematology / Oncology 5C/ 5D), Bart’s Cancer Centre

The post holder will support the ward manager in developing the team of registered nurses, nursing associates, health care support workers and student nurses in delivering safe effective care to patients within the inpatient ward area working in collaboration with the medical and wider MDT teams, ensuring a high-quality service to patients. The post holder will support the education and development of junior staff and learners within the clinical environment and participate in audits, appraisals always ensuring safety of the unit and deputise for the ward manager as and when necessary. The candidate will be proficient in administering chemotherapy and ideally with stem cell reinfusion if relevant to the clinical area

Main duties of the job

The post holder will support the Senior Sister / Senior Charge Nurse / Ward Manager in developing the team on the Inpatient ward area and deputise for them in their absence. They will always act as a role model ensuring safe and effective care is provided to all. The post holder will actively participate in meeting patient needs within the service to agreed standards and support in audit activities / data collection to ensure key national and local targets / Key performance indicators are met. The post holder will take on additional responsibilities as and when requested in collaboration with the ward manager matron and senior nurse with responsibility for the service. The post holder will support and participate in the smooth running of the ward in an efficient cost effective safe manner.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered Nurse, Degree qualification in Nursing or cancer related subject
  • Practice Assessor / supervisor qualification / teaching qualification
  • IV therapy competency
  • SACT qualification
  • REACT / SIREN or equivalent Stem cell administration competency (if relevant to ward area 5A, 5C, 5D)
Desirable criteria
  • Working towards master's Qualification
  • Advanced communication Leadership Course
  • Tracheostomy competency (Ward Specific 5A)

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Minimum 2 years' experience at band 5 or presently working at band 6 within a cancer setting
  • Experience in SACT (Systemic anti cancer treatment) administration and ability to give effective information and guidance to patients about disease, treatment and side effects
  • Experience in both acute and end of life care and supporting families.
Desirable criteria
  • Willingness to undertake training relevant to the role
  • Patient Assessment module

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • In depth knowledge and understanding of cancer patient clinical issues and common oncology emergencies and their management
  • Broad understanding of how a ward works and understadning of effective budgeting / resource management.
  • Knowledge of audit and data collection
Desirable criteria
  • Willingness to undertake any further training and development relative to the role
  • QI Training / Experience
