Job overview

A unique opportunity has become available for a band 7 Clinical Nurse Specialist for the Retinoblastoma service, within one of the two UK specialist services, based at The Royal London Hospital. The postholder will work as part of the multidisciplinary oncology and ophthalmology team that provides excellent highly specialised cancer care to patients and their families from diagnosis to remission and beyond.

The postholder will be a keyworker for children with retinoblastoma, coordinating their treatment and holistic care provision across all treating hospitals to ensure a seamless and effective cancer care journey.

They will act as an expert resource for trust colleagues and other health care professionals.  They will participate in educational activities and the teaching and development of other health care professionals, junior doctors, visiting clinicians, undergraduates and school staff.

There are significant opportunities to develop within the role, gaining experience in extended roles and a being involved in audit and research.

 

Your primary base will be The Royal London Hospital but the postholder will also be working at Great Ormond Street Hospital as the retinoblastoma service is across two sites (and Trusts).

Main duties of the job

The London Retinoblastoma service is one of 2 national treatment centres in the UK. We are a primary treatment centre for the diagnosis and treatment of Retinoblastoma. Treatment is provided across sites at The Royal London and Great Ormond Street Hospital.

2.      The post holder will be the identified key worker for the Retinoblastoma patient caseload, from external referring centres.  

3.      The post holder will facilitate and/or coordinate therapeutic treatment and care. They will ensure the needs of the patient are placed at the centre of care delivery.

4.      The post holder will provide effective clinical nursing leadership and will have specialist expert knowledge that will play a critical role in the Retinoblastoma service.

5.      To act as an expert resource in the care of patients and to colleagues within The Royal London and Great Ormond Street Hospital centres with the multidisciplinary team to provide comprehensive patient focused service.

6.      To take part in developing the nursing workforce, including training & teaching in relation to Retinoblastoma treatment.

7.      To participate in clinical audits, quality and risk management initiatives to ensure clinical excellence. 

9.      To represent the clinical specialty and Trust at internal and external meetings. This is undertaken in keeping with Improving Outcomes in Children and Young People with Cancer, Service Organisation (National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence, August 2005).

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • • NMC RSCN/RN(child)
  • • Specialist paediatric oncology qualification (Oncology course).
  • • Mentoring and teaching qualification or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • • Knowledge of genetics
  • Evidence of ongoing, dynamic continuing professional development within the oncology specialty and possession of relevant clinical competencies

Skills and abilities

  • • Excellent relevant paediatric clinical skills
  • • Expert oncology specialist skills and abilities for the post
  • • IV/central line competence
  • • Excellent managerial, leadership and organizational skills
