Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen at Barts Health for an enthusiastic and highly motivated Senior Specialist Dietitian to cover 12 hours (Monday & Tuesday) per week part time fixed term maternity leave role within Critical Care at Whipps Cross University Hospital, until 31st March 2026. The postholder would work alongside another Band 7 Critical Care Dietitian and the wider MDT team, made up of consultants, CNS' and other AHPs.


We are looking forward to welcoming a motivated and dynamic individual to our Nutrition & Dietetic service at Whipps Cross Hospital which comprises of 9 Dietitians and 4 dietetic support workers. The post holder will maintain a strong professional presence within both the dietetic team and the critical care MDT, building the dietetic service and contributing to relevant research and audit projects. 


We are committed to work-based education and training to improve clinical skills and there is a robust system in place for staff supervision and CPD. 

Main duties of the job

    To be responsible for providing highly specialist nutritional care to complex patients on the Intensive Care Unit at Whipps Cross Hospital. 
    To both provide a service to and support more junior team members in the support of patients with complex nutrition support needs on other wards of the hospital. 
    To supervise more junior staff on a day to day basis.  
    To ensure that research and audit is undertaken on a regular basis to ensure that practice is evidence based.    
    To act as an expert resource on the nutritional management of patients during critical illness and educate and train dietetic students and other health care professionals within the trust
    To be actively involved in the trusts clinical governance programme by taking a leadership role in ensuring continuing professional development, audit, research and service development activities within this specialist area.

Essential criteria
  • HCPC registered
  • BSc Nutrition & Dietetics or relevant postgraduate qualification
Desirable criteria
  • Teaching Qualification

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant experience working as a dietitian, including experience within nutritional support (oral and enteral)
  • Experience in critical care nutrition
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in parenteral nutrition

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • In depth knowledge to expert level in oral and enteral nutrition support within the critical care setting
  • Understanding of own knowledge and skills and ability to identify learning needs and interests

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Experience of Supervision of junior members of clinical staff and student Dietitians
  • Ability to work effectively independently and within ICU MDT
  • Ability to problem solve, analyse complex clinical problems and create practical solutions to provide best clinical care
  • Strong leadership skills
  • Accurate anthropometric measurements and skills, eg weights, heights, skinfold callipers to assess patients nutritional status and devise clinical plan
  • Ability to provide highly specialised advice concerning the care of critically unwell patients
  • Able to lead on service development, audit and research within critical care nutrition
Desirable criteria
  • Demonstrate a greater understanding of learning needs and evidence of facilitation skills

  • The ability to communicate with patients in an empathetic manner regarding their treatment and procedures
  • Ability to communicate life threatening/ complex medical conditions in a sensitive and easily understandable language
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with people eg. via advocacy/ interpreters
  • Able to reflect and appraise own performance
  • Able to maintain effective working relationships with relevant colleagues
