Group Chief Digital Officer job advert
Barts Health NHS Trust is seeking a Group Chief Digital Officer (CDO) who will operate as a key executive leader for digital infrastructure and development across Barts Health NHS Trust, with a significant leadership role across the North East London Integrated Care System (NEL ICS) and national digital networks. The CDO will provide strategic and operational leadership for the Trust’s digital portfolio, ensuring digital technology is embedded as a core enabler of safe, high‑quality, efficient and equitable care.
As the Trust’s most senior digital leader, the CDO will be accountable for delivering major digital transformation programmes, including Electronic Patient Record (EPR) optimisation, the development of resilient and secure digital infrastructure, and the advancement of data, analytics and digital capabilities.
Main duties of the job
Operating at Board and system level, you will combine strategic leadership with strong commercial, financial and operational oversight, building effective partnerships with clinicians, system partners, industry and academia.
You will bring significant executive‑level experience leading large‑scale digital transformation in complex, regulated environments, with a strong track record in EPR optimisation, commercial leadership and working across organisational boundaries. You will be a credible, values‑led leader, able to influence at Board, system and national level.

Essential criteria
- Executive or board level equivalent experience leading digital, data or technology functions, with a track record of delivering large‑scale digital change (including EPR or core systems) in a complex, regulated environment.
- Demonstrable senior‑level experience of providing commercial leadership for large‑scale digital or technology portfolios
Desirable criteria
- Experience working with academic, research or industry partners to support innovation
Skills
Essential criteria
- Outstanding leadership, communication, influencing and negotiation skills, with the ability to operate credibly at Board and system level
- Ability to set a compelling digital vision and translate it into clear priorities and deliverable programmes
Desirable criteria
- Experience of leading innovation, horizon scanning and technology adoption
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- In‑depth knowledge of digital technologies, data, analytics and cyber security, and their application to improving quality, safety, productivity and patient experience
- Understanding of the challenges of embedding digital transformation in complex clinical and operational environments
Desirable criteria
- Knowledge of NHS digital architecture, national standards, interoperability frameworks and digital maturity models
Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Educated to Master’s level or equivalent level of professional experience
- Professional qualification in digital, informatics, data or technology
Desirable criteria
- Formal management or executive leadership qualification and / or advanced programme or portfolio management certification
