Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the management team of NHS East and South East London Pathology Partnership (ESEL) in our journey to excellence. Applications are invited for the position of Haematology & Red Cell Operational Lead for our Network.


The successful applicant will need to be enthusiastic, share our vision of a high-quality Haematology service, and must be suitably qualified and highly experienced in Haematology. We are unable to offer visa sponsorship for this position.


The role is to provide management and leadership for the Haematology & Red Cell services across the ESEL Pathology network and is accountable for leading and managing the delivery and development of Haematology across all seven Pathology Partnership laboratory sites, with the potential for expansion. The post holder plays a pivotal part in the development and implementation of complex services and transformation that will improve the efficiency and quality of our Haematology services.


The post holder will ensure the continuing provision of a high quality and responsive service that is UKAS ISO15189 accreditation compliant and will work collaboratively with ESEL's Haematology Scientific and Operational Leads.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will have day-to-day management responsibility for the operational delivery of Haematology and Red Cell services across the Pathology Partnership. Based at the Royal London Partnership Hub, they will provide leadership, guidance and support to ESL Operational Leads to ensure the effective, consistent and high-quality delivery of services across all sites.
The post holder will oversee and supervise all service activities to ensure that operational and performance KPIs are achieved. They will manage and support departmental staff, promoting a culture of continuous improvement and excellence in service delivery, while ensuring the highest professional and technical standards are maintained at all times.
The post holder will ensure parity of service delivery across all sites through the effective management of workloads, workforce planning and skill mix, equipment, safety systems, quality assurance processes, incident management and the successful implementation of service transformation and continuous improvement.

Working for our organisation

The NHS East and South East London Pathology Partnership is an arms-length organisation providing pathology services to Barts Health NHS Trust, Homerton Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust and Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust.  The Pathology Partnership is hosted by Barts Health.

The Pathology Partnership was formed in May 2021.  Between 2021 and 2024 the Partnership undertook a complex transformation programme to establish a single network of laboratories, underpinned by a single Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) and single Quality Management System (QMS).

The Partnership has a main hub laboratory at the Royal London Hospital and Essential Service Laboratories (ESL) as a minimum at the six other hospital sites served by the Partnership.

The Partnership has three operational divisions:

·         Blood Sciences including Haematology, Blood Transfusion and Biochemistry

·         Microbiology and Virology

·         Cellular Pathology and Cancer Diagnostics

  • Extensive experience of Haematology and Red Cell Laboratory systems
  • Experience of effectively managing staff, including HR issues
  • Significant experience at Band 7 level in Haematology & Specialist Haematology

  • Experience of routine and specialist Haematology
  • Competent in complex laboratory techniques and troubleshooting
  • Ability to analyse, interpret and present complex data/results/concepts

  • Competent in the use of a Quality Management System
  • Working knowledge and experience of ISO 15189 standards
  • Intermediate computer skills, good knowledge of a word processing & spreadsheet packages
