Senior Specialist Biomedical Scientist -Haematology& Blood Transfusion  

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the NHS East and South East London Pathology Partnership’s (ESEL) Haematology Department.

We are looking to appoint an experienced Biomedical Scientist with a positive attitude, strong leadership skills and committed to meeting the needs of our patients by participating in an Agenda for Change shift system.

The successful candidate will be employed on a 6-month fixed term secondment based primarily at the Homerton Hospital site but may be expected to cover other partnership sites depending on service demand.

 

 

Main duties of the job

You will be responsible for the day-to-day management of the Haematology Laboratory at Homerton (including Coagulation and Haemoglobinopathy sections) and will take direction from supporting Operational Leads in transforming the delivery of services.

Working for our organisation

The NHS East and South East London Pathology Partnership  is an arms-length organisation providing pathology services to Barts Health NHS Trust, Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust.  The Pathology Partnership is hosted by Barts Health.

The Pathology Partnership is based on well-established models for pathology networks, with the Royal London Hospital becoming the main hub laboratory for the network and Essential Service Laboratories (ESL) as a minimum at all other Hospital sites.

Pathology is made up of the following services - Blood Sciences including Haematology, Blood Transfusion and Biochemistry; Infectious Diseases including Microbiology and Virology; Cellular Pathology including Histopathology, non-gynae Cytology and mortuary services; Immunology; Cytogenetics and Molecular Haematology; Immunophenotyping; Clinical Transplantation and Retinoblastoma.  

The 2020/21 total operating costs across the Partnership were c. £126m per annum with a workforce establishment of circa. 822 WTE.  We strive to live by our WeCare values and are committed to promoting inclusion, where every staff member has a sense of belonging. Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MSc. Biomedical Science or IBMS Special Examination (Fellowship)
  • Holder of the IBMS Certificate of Competence, Registration Portfolio.
  • Registration with the Health Care Professions Council
  • Evidence of continuous professional development
Desirable criteria
  • Management/ Quality training
  • Knowledge of higher specialist but relevant area

Experience

Essential criteria
  • At least 5 years post HCPC registration in diagnostic Haematology & Blood Transfusion.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of effectively managing staff
  • Experience of teaching staff

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Advanced scientific knowledge for relevant discipline
  • Detailed understanding of UKAS, Quality Management Systems
  • Good understanding of Health & Safety Legislation
  • Good understanding of Governance
  • Requirements. Detailed knowledge of MHRA legislation
Desirable criteria
  • Advanced QPulse user
  • BBTS Specialist Certificate in Transfusion science practice
