About the Role
We are seeking a Post‑CCT Clinical Fellow in Interventional Radiology to join our service at The Royal London Hospital, part of Barts Health NHS Trust. This role is suited to someone who has completed or is close to completing their CCT and wishes to further develop advanced IR skills.

The post is for a full time Interventional Radiology trainee based mainly at The Royal London Hospital but also at St Bartholomew’s Hospital. 

You will join a dynamic and evolving workforce in an organisation with a dedicated interventional radiology suite which is amongst the largest in the UK with significant plans for expansion. 

The service is made up of 12 substantive consultant interventional radiologists, 8 dedicated interventional radiographers and 45 nurses who support interventional radiology lists as well as 6 health care assistants. The service has five dedicated interventional radiology rooms and 2 hybrid room operating rooms, 1 at RLH and 1 at SBH.

 

Main duties of the job

The candidate will be responsible for participating in duties related to interventional radiology across Barts Health NHS Trust. 

There is an East London Vascular Network with 14 vascular surgeons. The Trust is a recognised national and regional referral centre for hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery, upper GI and colorectal cancer, urology, renal medicine, oncology and cardiothoracic surgery.

The helicopter emergency medical service (HEMS) is part of the busy major trauma centre based at the Royal London Hospital, often requiring interventional services.  
There are currently 12 radiologists providing interventional radiology services and 5 providing interventional neuroradiology services.

There will also be sessions in general diagnostic radiology to complement time in interventional radiology. Barts Radiology training programme has 50 clinical radiology trainees across the network. Within this there are also trainees specializing in IR. 

Candidates will be required to adhere to the Trust’s policy on Maintaining Medical Excellence and to be committed to maintaining their standard of performance by keeping their knowledge and skills up to date.

Acute interventional on call duties will be part of the post at a 1 in 6 frequency, non-resident, with IR consultant supervision.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • FRCR or equivalent
  • Full GMC registration
  • Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Interventional Radiology

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Eligible for specialist register in Radiology
  • Radiology SpR in an approved training post, or equivalent training with at least 3 years of IR experience
  • Or Previous Clinical fellow experience
  • Demonstrable commitment and enthusiasm for Interventional radiology
  • Evidence of recent CME/reasonable training progression at this stage of career
  • Demonstrable audit/QIP experience

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Appropriate levels of clinical knowledge
  • Shows awareness of own limitations
  • Demonstrates knowledge of evidence informed practice
  • Demonstrate wide awareness of issues in health care

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Ability to prioritise clinical need. Ability to effectively organise oneself and own work
  • Active involvement in audit with demonstration of improved outcomes/change. Relevant Information Technology Skills. Understanding of NHS, clinical governance & resource constraints; management/ financial awareness; experience of committee work
  • Ability to take a leading developing/managing a clinical area
  • Evidence of teaching experience at undergraduate and postgraduate levels and ability to teach clinical skills in multidisciplinary settings. Willingness to contribute to departments teaching and training needs
  • Formal teaching/training diploma or course
  • Ability to practice evidence-based medicine
  • Research experience/ publications/presentations
  • Experience in development and implementation of clinical guidelines
  • “Good Clinical Practice” trained
