Job overview

This post is a locum consultant post in paediatric anaesthesia based at The Royal London Hospital. The vacancy has arisen due to a sabbatical. The post holder will be an employee of Bart’s Health and there may be future opportunities or requirements to work at any of the other hospitals in the Barts Health group.

Main duties of the job

This is a post for a consultant paediatric anaesthetist, with an interest in and subspeciality experience of pain management and perioperative medicine for paediatric patients. The appointee must be able to work flexibly and be able to cover the range of specialties provided for in the Paediatric Anaesthesia service at The Royal London Hospital.

Person specification

Qualifications/Clinical Skills

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC Registration with a ‘Licence to Practice’
  • MBBS or MBChB or equivalent
  • CCT in anaesthesia or equivalent or, if in training within 6 months of CCT
  • FRCA or equivalent
  • ALS/ATLS/APLS/EPLS provider
  • SIA, Fellowship or equivalent Advanced training in paediatric anaesthesia (at least 6 months)
  • Available to work for the full period referred to in the job advert
Desirable criteria
  • Wide experience and knowledge of the UK healthcare system
  • Post-CCT/consultant level experience in paediatric anaesthesia
  • Membership of specialist societies relevant to the job plan
  • ALS provider
  • Level 3 Child Protection training

Special Knowledge/ Abilities and/or Experience

Essential criteria
  • Extensive experience in provision of anaesthesia for a wide variety of paediatric and adult anaesthesia
  • Experience in independent delivery of anaesthesia for complex neonatal patients
  • Experience in independent delivery of anaesthesia for complex paediatric patients
  • Proficient in the perioperative care of paediatric patients, including acute pain management
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in paediatric regional anaesthesia
  • Experience in anaesthesia for adults with learning disabilities
  • Experience in the management of paediatric major trauma
  • Experience in paediatric peri-operative medicine, including pre-operative assessment and enhance recovery pathways

Personal Skills/Qualities

  • Ability to communicate clearly and intelligently in written and spoken English to a wide range of audiences
  • Ability to build strong and effective relationships with patients, relatives and colleagues
  • Ability to cope with pressure and adapt to change
Desirable criteria
  • Leadership skills appropriate to leading a multidisciplinary team
  • Ability to take personal responsibility for the delivery of high-quality care, make decisions and exert appropriate authority
  • Ability to innovate

Teaching & Training

Essential criteria
  • Involvement in teaching of allied health professionals
  • Involvement in teaching of junior medical staff
  • Evidence of training in teaching skills
  • Training in clinical supervision
Desirable criteria
  • Involvement in undergraduate education.
  • Involvement in postgraduate education
  • Experience of setting up an education module/ course
  • APLS, EPLS, ALS or ATLS instructor status

Research

Essential criteria
  • Formal training in research methodology
  • Active participation in research
  • Presentation of abstracts and posters at specialist society academic meetings
  • Ability to critically appraise published evidence & apply research outcomes to clinical problems
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of presentations to learned societies on topics related to anaesthesia.
  • Publication of original research (abstracts or papers)
  • Authorship of book chapters or books
  • Higher degree (Masters, MD Res or PhD)
