Finance Director (Pathology Partnership)
This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a tight-knit director team which runs one of the NHS’ largest pathology networks. We carry out over 100,000 tests a day for over three million patients.
As Finance Director you will be responsible for delivering all aspects of the Pathology Partnership’s financial and business management.
You will also be deeply involved in broader strategic and day-to-day decision making for the organisation to ensure that we stay true to our vision ‘to always deliver consistently reliable and timely pathology tests for every one of our patients’.
We need a finance director who has financial acumen as well as technical skills and wis able to communicate persuasively across the entire organisation and to our three owner trusts. The Partnership is co-owned by Barts Health, Homerton Healthcare and Lewisham and Greenwich Trusts.
You will be a member of the Pathology Partnership’s Board, together with four other directors, six executive directors from our three owner trusts and an independent Chair.
The Pathology Partnership is hosted by Barts Health and so you will have the support of one of the NHS’ largest hospital groups.

Main duties of the job
You will be responsible for delivering all aspects of the Pathology Partnership’s financial and business management.
You will lead a team of accountants and other specialist business staff to provide strategic and day-to-day support of the Pathology Partnership’s financial activity, business intelligence, business and contract support and procurement performance whilst maintaining a team ethic across the Pathology Partnership and within your finance division.
You will be a key member of the Pathology Partnership’s director team, providing collective leadership to the organisation and will be a member of the Partnership’s Board. You will provide leadership across the Pathology Partnership and owner Trusts, demonstrating expert accounting and business knowledge, analytical support and clear presentation of complex financial and other information to clinical and non-clinical colleagues.
You will be responsible for the delivery, accuracy and timeliness of the monthly performance reports to the Pathology Partnership’s Board, ensuring that procedure and controls are up to date and implemented.
You will constructively and positively challenge all aspects of the Pathology Partnership’s financial and business performance and will drive and support CIP delivery programmes alongside operational colleagues.
You will provide support to the Chief Executive with the strategic direction and business plan of the Pathology Partnership.
Working for our organisation
The NHS East and South East London Pathology Partnership is an arms-length organisation providing pathology services to Barts Health NHS Trust, Homerton Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust and Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust. The Pathology Partnership is hosted by Barts Health.
The Pathology Partnership was formed in May 2021. Between 2021 and 2024 the Partnership undertook a complex transformation programme to establish a single network of laboratories, underpinned by a single Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) and single Quality Management System (QMS).
The Partnership has a main hub laboratory at the Royal London Hospital and Essential Service Laboratories at the six other hospital sites served by the Partnership.
The Partnership has three operational divisions
- Blood Sciences including Haematology, Blood Transfusion and Biochemistry
- Microbiology and Virology
- Cellular Pathology and Cancer Diagnostics
The 2024/25 total operating costs across the Partnership were c. £121m per annum with a workforce establishment of circa. 860 WTE.
