Job overview

We are looking for an enthusiastic and highly motivated Patient Safety Midwife to lead in key clinical presence across maternity services, helping to develop and maternity staff in learning from safety incidents and reducing harm and risk across the maternity service.

As part of the maternity patient safety team, you will deliver expert training and guidance surrounding quality and safety and collaborate with the senior midwifery team to implement evidence-based practices and manage risk.

The patient safety midwife will Support the Deputy Associate Director of Midwifery and Lead for Quality and Safety to ensure key safety messages and learning are being delivered to the MDT in the Women’s Division.

The successful post holder will work closely with the lead obstetric consultant for clinical governance and ensure the learning from key adverse incidents is shared with the wider MDT via teaching, presentations, and simulation as part of a wider commitment to improving the safety culture in maternity services.

The patient safety midwife will work closely with clinical governance operational leads to ensure complaints & adverse incident are investigated in a timely manner, thematically reviewed and presented back to the teams – working with our patient experience and engagement leads to ensure credible improvement plans are introduced.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work as a senior support to the Divisional leadership team for Women’s services and deliver key learning work streams linked to the output of the women’s operational clinical governance team. 

This includes using data from Datix for updating ward and unit safety boards, developing safety newsletters, writing up and presenting patient cases alongside thematically reviewing adverse incidents, trends in risks and the Divisional complaints activity. 

This role will be a key clinical presence across maternity services, helping to develop and coach local leaders in learning from safety incidents and reducing harm and risk across the division.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Band 7 Midwife with UK professional Registration or Senior Band 6 with recent experience in an acute setting
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of clinical governance activities within maternity services
  • Experience of evaluating ‘evidence’ against prescribed standards for a range of assessments
  • Experience of analysing and design, practical implementation and effectiveness of structures and processes to provide evidence based opinion and recommendations for improvement.
  • Demonstrable experience of working within a clinical governance arena

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Degree or equivalent experience in relevant discipline
  • Registered midwife with current registration
  • Evidence of recent and ongoing continuous professional and personal development action and activity.
  • Practice Supervisor/ Assessor
Desirable criteria
  • Willing to undertake a MSc in Healthcare Safety
  • Root Cause Analysis Investigation Training

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Can demonstrate an understanding of a good safety culture and the correct support systems that should be in place to achieve this.
  • Good working knowledge in all aspects of clinical governance including patient safety, risk management and improvement
  • Knowledge of maternity services, nursing and midwifery issues, including, statutory frameworks, national policies and broad national NHS context
Desirable criteria
  • Project management knowledge/skills
  • Comprehensive knowledge of use of databases and commercial IT systems
