Job overview
We are pleased to offer an opportunity for a Band 7 Highly Specialised Scientist / Physiologist at the Royal London Hospital.
In this role, you will be a senior figure in running the day-to-day operations and the delivery of a new intra-operative monitoring service. You will collaborate with our Consultant and physiologist/scientist team to provide service input and support for junior colleagues, ensuring the continuous improvement and development of services.
We are looking for an individual who is flexible, proactive, and effective in managing both their own workload and their colleagues. Strong communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills will be essential to support the delivery of service.

Main duties of the job
The Department of Neurophysiology provides comprehensive and specialist investigative services to both inpatients and outpatients of Barts Health NHS Trust and surrounding hospitals, this includes neonatal, paediatric and adult population groups. Additionally, the department provides a portable investigative servicesat the bedside for critically ill patients outside the Trust. Patients are of all ages, come from a large range of specialties and suffer from a wide variety of medical disorders affecting the central and peripheral nervous systems. Referrals come mainly from Neurology, Neurosurgery, Neonatology, Paediatrics, Intensive Care, General Medicine, Ophthalmology, Orthopaedics and Psychiatry. The most frequently encountered disorders include Epilepsy, Head Injury, Infective Disorders of the brain (e.g. Encephalitis), Anoxic Brain Damage, Nerve Entrapment, and Multiple Sclerosis.

Essential criteria
- Ability to perform all techniques within all EEG modalities for neonatal, paediatric and adult patient populations within outpatient, general inpatient and ITU settings. This includes routine, sleep, prolonged, ambulatory, and drug induced.
- Must be able to perform all techniques within Video Telemetry both in-patient and home VT for both adult and paediatric patients.
- Ability to perform and interpret all evoked potential modalities inclusive of VEP, PERG, SSEP and BAEP
- Ability to perform standard nerve conduction studies
- Experience in Intraoperative Neurophysiological Modalities for peripheral, vascular, spinal, supra- and infra- tentorial surgical procedures

Essential criteria
- Ability to perform a wide range of Neurophysiological investigations.
- Sensitivity to both children and adults who may be suffering from a variety of medical disorders, including those neurological or psychiatric in nature.
- Ability to communicate complex and sensitive information in a variety of forms to patients, relatives and carers. Including children and patients with learning or physical disabilities
- Ability to adapt and work in challenging environments such as ITU or theatres
- Ability to work alone and in a team

- Coaching skills
- Formal teaching and/or supervision of junior staff
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Able to quantify and evaluate specialist Neurophysiological investigation results and patient conditions
- IT literate

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Qualifications in Clinical Physiology Neurophysiology. BSc (Hons) or equivalent; Equivalent formal training; Other appropriate training (BTec, HNC/D)
Desirable criteria
- ENCE Part II; MSc Equivalent; STP; NSHCS programs; Specialist Training Courses
- Membership of professional organisations: HCPC; ANS; AHCS
