Barts Health NHS Trust is seeking a dynamic, dedicated Consultant Obstetrician with a special interest in maternal medicine to join the expanding Women’s Health team at Newham University Hospital. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to a forward-thinking, patient-centred service within one of the UK’s most diverse communities.
About the Role:
You will be expected to provide high-quality care in both general obstetrics and maternal medicine, providing comprehensive clinical care to obstetric patients with a focus on maternal medicine, including high-risk pregnancies, pre-existing medical conditions, and complex pregnancies.
The role will contribute to the development and implementation of clinical pathways, policies, and procedures related to maternal medicine and obstetrics. Successful candidate will be participating in teaching, mentoring, and supporting junior doctors and medical students.
The key role will also lead on research initiatives in maternal medicine and obstetrics, fostering an environment of continuous improvement.
Main duties of the job
The post holder is occasionally exposed to episodes of light exertion depending on the acuity on the labour ward. Standard keyboard skills required. Advanced sensory skills are required. The post holder may be required to lift, push and pull objects, using trolleys in accordance with trust moving and handling regulations. The post holder may be required to travel between 3 Trust sites. There are frequent times when they will be required to sit, stand or walk.
The post holder will be exposed to circumstances that are stressful, distressing, or emotional. They will frequently be required to support staff/patients/clients during discussions and decision-making process. The post holder has to be able to work successfully under pressure of time and resources. They may have to deal with staff and patients and their families who are angry/upset/tearful. Staff members will be exposed to emotive situations while working e.g. Death, child protection issues/cases.
Frequent episodes of exposure to VDU screens whilst inputting data.
The post holder may be required to work across sites, but in acceptable working conditions.
May be exposed to verbal abuse from distresses patients or family members.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- CCST/CCT (or equivalent), or within 6 months of a date, or entry on the Specialist Register of the GMC for Obstetrics & Gynaecology
- ATSM in Obstetrics and Labour ward management
- ATSMSTIM in Maternal Medicine
Experience
Essential criteria
- Wide experience in Obstetrics and high risk maternal medicine
Desirable criteria
- Quality improvement projects and/or research related to Obstetrics and maternal medicine
- Experience of the UK healthcare system
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Record of Completed audit projects
- An understanding of Clinical Governance and its application to Obstetrics.
Desirable criteria
- NHS complaint handling
