Job overview
The post is for a full-time (10 PAs) fixed term Specialty Dentist in Oral Surgery within the Oral Surgery and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department at Barts Health NHS Trust. This post will be based between the Royal London Dental Hospital in Whitechapel and Whipps Cross Hospital in Waltham Forest. Successful candidates may be asked to work at any Barts Health NHS Trust site.
The job entails meeting the demands of the Oral Surgery service, ensuring the quality of the service is maintained and supporting training of colleagues. The service runs a number of specialist multidisciplinary clinics with Orthodontics, Restorative Dentistry, Haematology and Cardiology.
Barts Health NHS Trust provides level 3 services receiving referrals from general dental practitioners, medical practitioners and the local community dental service. The department is responsible for education of undergraduate and postgraduate dental students and professionals complimentary to dentistry. It provides dental foundation training, specialist training and postgraduate education.
Main duties of the job
The job description reflects the current situation and will be reviewed regularly in discussion with the post-holder and co-clinical leads depending on the needs of the service in line with the Hospital/Institute and unit’s goals.
A job plan will be created in line with service needs and will be discussed with you upon appointment in post. This post is for 10 PAs (programmed activities).
The Oral Surgery department provides treatment for adolescents and adults with level 3 dental services or those with complex medical or social history. Minor oral surgical procedures on children are also carried out in the day stay unit.
The successful applicant will join an enthusiastic team and undertake new patient consultation clinics, treatment clinics including treatment lists commensurate with their experience and support with referral vetting. They will be involved in day-to-day service provision of the department and take on roles suitable to their level of experience.
They will also be expected to take an active role in teaching and training and participate in audit and supervision of postgraduates’ research projects.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Full registration with the United Kingdom General Dental Council (GDC).
- A minimum of 4 years experience in Oral Surgery post BDS.
- Fellowship in Dental Surgery or membership of faculty of Dental Surgery, or equivalent.
Desirable criteria
- On the specialist GDC list in Oral Surgery.
- ILS (or equivalent) within one year of application
- Possession of a certificate of Accreditation or eligibility for a CCST in Oral Surgery, or equivalent.
Teaching
Essential criteria
- Experience of teaching to an appropriate level.
- Supervision of junior staff.
Desirable criteria
- Teaching qualification.
Knowledge, Audit and Research
Essential criteria
- Effective participation in audit.
- Ability to appraise scientifically
- Understanding of the principles of research.
