Locum Consultant Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Surgeon

This 12 month fixed term post provides an excellent opportunity to join a dynamic group of orthopaedic surgeons who are rapidly forging an impressive reputation as a strongly cohesive, progressive department that consistently strives to provide the best possible care for our patients.

Main duties of the job

The fixed term post will support the work of Barts Bone & Joint Health Foot & Ankle Unit. The role is based across 3 sites – The Royal London Hospital, our major trauma centre, Whipps Cross Hospital, our specialist fragility fracture centre and The Barts Health Orthopaedic Centre (BHOC) – a GIRFT accredited elective hub.

The successful candidate will be fellowship trained and is expected to have experience in managing the breadth of elective foot and ankle surgery. Experience of diabetic foot & ankle conditions and total ankle arthroplasty is also desirable. The ideal candidate will have experience of managing complex foot and ankle trauma, post-traumatic reconstruction and general high energy trauma. They will also have experience of working within a major trauma centre setting. They will be expected to contribute to the major trauma on-call rota at The Royal London Hospital, one of Europe’s busiest trauma centres. They will also support the Foot & Ankle trauma work within the specialist fragility fracture service at Whipps Cross Hospital.

Our foot and ankle unit works cohesively with our limb reconstruction colleagues and has a regular MDT. The new consultant will be expected to help integrate foot and ankle services across all hospital sites and lead multi-specialty service development. A strong academic background is desirable.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC Registration with current licence to practice
  • The candidate should be on the GMC specialist register or within 6-months of obtaining this
  • Evidence of participation in research (peer reviewed publications etc.)
  • Foot & Ankle Fellowship training
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of innovative approaches to healthcare

Other

Essential criteria
  • Audit experience
  • Ability to advise on efficient & smooth running of a specialist service and to organise & manage outpatient priorities, surgical waiting & operating lists
  • Experience of supervising doctors in training and in teaching clinical & operative skills
  • Experience of research, presentations to learned societies on topics related to surgery
  • Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical/surgical problems
  • Publications in indexed journals
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of audit management
  • Experience of teaching clinical skills to undergraduates
