Senior Clinical Nurse Specialist Pain Management

Job overview

The Pain Team contribute towards a safe and effective inpatient and outpatient pain management service for Barts Health. Newham University Hospital. We take pride in being the hub for the Barts Health Orthopaedic Centre (BHOC). As part of this centre of excellence initiative, the pain team plays an active role in managing the orthopaedic joint school, where they deliver patient education. requiring major surgical procedures, in preparing them for their post-operative pain management. To achieve this, you will be expected to demonstrate knowledge and skills required for a clinical nurse specialist in pain management. This will be measured against the Royal College of Nursing Pain Knowledge and Skills Framework for the Nursing Team as part of an appraisal process.

The pain service also provides specialist care for patients experiencing acute and chronic pain. Additionally working  quite closely with the multi- disciplinary team, inclusive of  the consultants in pain medicine, physio therapist, psychologist, pharmacist and the residential medical officer (RMO). The service operates across in-patient and out-patient clinic sessions (BHOC pre-operative pain management clinics). 

Main duties of the job

EDUCATION

1.       Participate in all educational program the Pain Management Service are committed to, including joint school teaching and contribute to the further development and delivery of educational initiatives.

2.       Participate in activities to monitor and evaluate educational needs for patients and staff and implement any changes required.

3.       Ensure up to date knowledge of development/research to act as resource/advisor to staff and to influence and facilitate change in practice.

4.       Promote and support the Pain Link Nurse programme for clinical areas.

 

5.       Organise and develop pain management study days / seminars.

 

6.       Facilitate staff in the use of a pain scoring system.

 

7.       Participate in educating new doctor intakes, in specialist areas and outside the Trust concerning acute and chronic pain management.

 

8.       Act as a resource for clinical staff relating to pain management.

 

9.       Maintain links with Local Universities and participate in formal educational programmes for pre and post registration nurses.

 

10.    Attends and actively participates in meetings and conferences as appropriate ensuring you are fully conversant with current issues both within the Trust and within the specialty, locally and nationally.

 

11.    Maintain accurate and contemporaneous records of attendance at training, for both self and other members of the specialist nursing team.

  • Pain Management course at level 6/7 or any additional qualification in pain Management
Desirable criteria
  • Nurse Independent Prescriber

Experience

  • Experience in management of Epidural infusion and other regional blocks

  • Experience of nurse-led clinics

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Understand the principles of pain management including physiology, anatomy, pharmacology, chronic disease management and other relevant treatment options
