St Joseph’s Hospice and Newham Hospital are looking for a Locum consultant to join the team on a joint contract for a 12-month maternity cover
The Locum Consultant in Palliative Medicine will be responsible for the provision of specialist care to community, hospital, and hospice patients. The role is split between St Joseph’s Hospice (STJH) and Newham University Hospital, with a 5:5 division of programmed activities per week.
The consultant will also participate in a 1 in 8 on-call rota.
Main duties of the job
Clinical responsibilities:
The consultants are clinically responsible for St Josephs’ Hospice patients who live in City and Hackney, Tower Hamlets and Newham, which are split into two areas. Additionally, the post holders will work at Newham University Hospital providing consultant input with the hospital palliative care team.
The post holders will provide consultant input to weekly MDT meetings for both areas of the community team and within the hospital. They will undertake caseload reviews and carry out visits and give advice. The consultants will also provide support and leadership to the day hospice. The consultants will cross cover each other for leave.
In addition the consultants will provide cross cover to one of the wards to assist the part time consultant who covers the ward. They will also provide cross cover for the other hospice ward when that consultant is on leave and cross cover at Newham hospital when the other consultant is on leave.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Delivery of consultant level medical care to specialist palliative care patients (using a holistic approach, addressing the individual patients’ physical, psychological, social and spiritual needs).
Provide consultant input and advice to the multi-disciplinary, specialist palliative care team to optimise patient care.
Provide medical consultant leadership at weekly multi-disciplinary team meetings.
Reviewing complex cases and providing verbal advice & support to community team Clinical Nurse Specialists, plus undertaking joint home visits as necessary.
Undertaking home visits and providing telephone and video contact & advice to more complex patients & their families.
Undertaking clinical reviews of the case load of community Clinical Nurse Specialists.
Working closely and communicating appropriately with healthcare teams outside of the hospice and hospital, to ensure good continuity of patient care.
Provision of medical advice and support to the First Contact referrals team as required. Holding the urgent referral bleep on rotation with other consultants.
Provision of clinical advice to external healthcare professionals by telephone or by undertaking joint visits.
Use of the multi-lingual advocacy service to aid assessment of and communication with patients & families who do not speak English fluently

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- MRCP/MRCGP/FRCP
- Full GMC registration with license to practise
Desirable criteria
- Diploma, Masters Degree or other higher degree in Palliative Medicine
Research, Audit & teaching
Essential criteria
- Evidence of critical thinking and the ability to apply evidence in clinical practice
- Recognition of the importance of on-going CPD
- Experience of undergraduate and/or postgraduate teaching
- Evidence of involvement in audit projects and quality improvement projects
Desirable criteria
- Publications in peer-reviewed journals
- Evidence of experience and interest in development of self as teacher
- Experience of leading or significant contribution to audit groups
Skills
Essential criteria
- Evidence of good personal organisation, including time management and meeting deadlines
- Evidence of effective interpersonal and communication skills, particularly in handling difficult situations
- Evidence of ability to work within a multidisciplinary team, both as a member and as a leader
- Evidence of ability and willingness to work within a multicultural hospice and community
- Evidence of flexibility and willingness to work collaboratively within a team of consultants
