An exciting opportunity for a Band 6 Research Nurse to join the Children’s research team at Barts Health NHS Trust, this will be a one year grant funded post. The research that we conduct is focused on the holistic approach to patient care and significantly contributes to the future progress of healthcare for all. Working clinically with the team you will promote high standards of both patient care and research practice and contribute to the recruitment and retention of patients in clinical research studies. 

The post holder’s primary role will be to contribute actively to the conduct, coordination and delivery of the paediatric respiratory research studies spanning the community and hospital settings. This role would involve working with paediatric tuberculosis clinics and TB nurses and doctors recruiting children to studies involving clinical data and sample collection from children in East London at The Royal London Hospital, Whipps Cross University Hospital and Newham University sites within Barts Health NHS Trusts.

Main duties of the job

Working effectively with the immediate and broader multidisciplinary team, being responsible for ensuring that high standards of clinical care planning, delivery, safety and patient satisfaction is to a very high standard, compliant with trust policy, study protocol requirements, local and national guidance and legislation. The post holder will be responsible for assessing and managing the care pathways for patients and carers participating in research studies. This will involve the recruitment, obtaining informed consent, education and monitoring of children in studies and the collection and documentation of accurate data. You will work closely with your extended team, sponsors, R&D, investigators and the study / clinical teams. You will undertake and complete studies on the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) portfolio in a reliable, timely and efficient fashion. You will work collaboratively with the wider multi-disciplinary team (MDT) in the management of your own caseload of children and carers in the clinical studies. The post holder will deliver the studies under the leadership of the Senior Research Nurse and Children’s Lead Research Nurse at the Royal London Hospital Children’s Clinical Research Facility.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

This post represents an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic, self-motivated, organised nurse to develop their clinical research skills. Computer skills, team-working, flexibility and initiative will be required to ensure the success of this post. You will need to have an excellent level of written and verbal communication skills. Previous research experience is desirable for the post.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered Children’s Nurse with current NMC registration.
  • Evidence of on-going professional development
Desirable criteria
  • First level degree
  • Health care management/leadership qualification.
  • Valid GCP certificate.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of recruiting to research studies including clinical trials in a healthcare setting.
  • Substantial post registration experience working as band 6 children’s nurse in the NHS care setting.
  • Experience of co-ordinating and managing patient care.
  • Evidence of ability to lead /coordinate a shift/ area of department.
  • Experience in learning from incidents/ complaints and supporting changes in practice.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of paediatric respiratory medicine and asthma and/or tuberculosis

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Understanding of current issues in children’s nursing.
  • To identify a child at risk and to know the process of safeguarding in children, young people, and vulnerable adults.
Desirable criteria
  • Leadership and management development.
  • Understanding of Good Clinical Practice (GCP).
