Practice Development Nurse

Band 7

Barts Health is one of the largest NHS trusts in the country, and one of Britain’s leading healthcare providers.

The Barts Health group of NHS hospitals is entering an exciting new era on our improvement journey to becoming an outstanding organisation with a world-class clinical reputation. Having lifted ourselves out of special measures, we now have the impetus and breathing space to chart a fresh course in which we are continually striving to improve all our services for patients.

Our vision is to be a high-performing group of NHS hospitals, renowned for excellence and innovation, and providing safe and compassionate care to our patients in east London and beyond. That means being a provider of excellent patient safety, known for delivering consistently high standards of harm-free care and always caring for patients in the right place at the right time. It also means being an outstanding place to work, in which our WeCare values and behaviours are visible to all and guide us in how we work together.

Barts Health supports the Pregnancy Loss Pledge and commits to supporting their staff through the distress of miscarriage.

We are dedicated to being an outstanding place to work and will work with you to get the best experience. We know flexible working is not a one size fits all and will mean something different to everyone. We are inclusive, so if you are interested in flexible working, please speak to the recruiting manager.

Job overview

An opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated Band 7 to join our Neurosciences unit in the capacity of a Practice Development Nurse. We are seeking an individual who has the integrity, drive and commitment to build upon the achievements made thus far and who will continue to lead the nursing team in providing the best quality care for this client group and their families. To be successful you will need to be committed to ensuring patients are treated with dignity, care and compassion.

The Royal London Hospital is one of Europe’s largest major trauma centres, and is nationally and internationally recognised for its work in advancing trauma care.

This is an exciting and rewarding role, which would be suitable for a candidate with Neurosciences experience, and a strong track record of working collaboratively to maintain and develop safe, effective and compassionate services. You will be working as part of a friendly and supportive team within Neurosciences and the Emergency Care & Trauma Division at the Royal London.

The role of the Practice Development Nurse is to be an expert practitioner who will lead by example and who can provide leadership and organisation to the multidisciplinary team. The post holder will be key in ensuring that new nurses are inducted onto the Neurosciences unit and support the other nurses in their continuing education.

Main duties of the job

The Practice Development Nurse (PDN) for Neurosciences is responsible for driving excellence in clinical practice, education, and workforce development across these high-acuity specialties within the Neurosciences Services. The post holder will lead initiatives that promote evidence-based care, professional growth, and a culture of continuous improvement, ensuring that nursing practice aligns with NHSE, CQC, NMC and supporting learning within Neurosciences.

Working collaboratively with clinical leaders, matrons, educators, and the multidisciplinary team, the PDN will design, deliver, and evaluate education programmes that enhance knowledge, skills, and confidence among staff. The post holder will support professional development through structured induction, competency assessment, supervision, and coaching, while also identifying learning needs in response to changing service demands and patient acuity.

Alongside their educational role, the PDN will contribute to clinical governance, quality improvement, and safety initiatives, translating audit outcomes, incident reviews, and research evidence into practice improvements. The post holder will act as a visible clinical leader and role model, fostering compassionate, patient-centred care, and embedding a culture of learning and accountability that supports both staff wellbeing and excellent patient outcomes.
