Job overview

An opportunity has arisen for an ambitious band 7 Dietitian to take leadership of an award winning  hepatology service at the Royal London Hospital. This internationally recognised service has demonstrated the vital role of specialist dietetic involvement in the management of patients with advanced liver disease. The service has demonstrated improvements in recompensation rates, improved suitability for TIPSS and transplant, as well as reduction in paracentesis requirements and A&E admissions. The Trust has recognised the invaluable role of dietetics within Hepatology by way of this funding.  This unique opportunity also provides introduction to research opportunities through links established through Queen Mary University of London

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be responsible for the dietetic assessment and intervention for all patients with advanced liver disease across the inpatient and outpatient settings, including day case paracentesis. The post holder will work closely with a MDT of Consultants, Registrars, Specialist Nurses and Pharmacists. The post holder will advocate for nutritional interventions to support decision making during weekly hepatology team meetings and MDT clinics.

There will be a requirement to liaise with Specialist Dietitians at the Royal Free Hospital for patients on a liver transplant pathway, and to liaise with Community Dietitians for patients discharged home with enteral feeding tubes. 

The successful candidate will also provide dietetic support by way of a weekly clinic for patients with metabolic-associated steatotic liver disease.

A Dietitian applying for this role should be highly motivated and hard-working with previous experience of managing a busy caseload across inpatient and outpatient settings. Excellent communication skills are essential for this role. Candidates with previous experience of data collection and business case writing would be encouraged to apply.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • BSc Nutrition & Dietetics or relevant postgraduate qualification
  • Qualification in area of specialisation or evidence of experience in speciality area
  • HCPC registered
Desirable criteria
  • Post graduate training in area of specialty
  • Non-medical prescribing qualification

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Extensive experience in complex nutrition support
  • Experience working with patients with advanced liver disease
  • Extensive experience in enteral nutrition
  • Extensive experience in decision making, advocacy, organization and implementation of home enteral feeding (NG or NJ)
  • Experience in taking part in project work that supports improvement in service or supports a change in practice
  • Experience in developing a service and establishing/maintaining a dietetic presence within an MDT
  • Experience collecting and analyzing data for service improvement purposes
  • Experience measuring anthropometry and using the results to influence dietetic decision making
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in working in a liver transplant centre
  • Experience writing a business case

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • In-depth knowledge in nutritional support
  • Understanding of treatment interventions and pathways for patients with advanced liver disease
  • Knowledge of the importance of diet and lifestyle in the reversal and prevention of liver disease
