Job overview

An excellent opportunity has arisen within Barts Arthritis Centre, for a clinical nurse specialist to join a team of dynamic rheumatologists and specialist nurses at Mile End. We are the second largest rheumatology department in the country, with particular expertise in treating inflammatory diseases, spinal disorders, connective tissue diseases and osteoporosis. We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated nurse who will be involved in assessing, planning care, implementing and monitoring of rheumatology patients. The successful candidate will be based mainly at Mile End Hospital and the day unit on Grove Infusions Unit , Mile End Hospital. The post holder must demonstrate a high level of practical and decision-making skills in order to safeguard patients particularly those on immunosuppressant and biologic therapies. The post holder must have the necessary skills to ensure appropriate education and support to meet the physical, psychological and social needs of rheumatology patients and their carers. Opportunities for training will be offered.

Main duties of the job

▪ To assist in the provision of expert advice and interventions within the Rheumatology service

▪ Maintain and improve standards of care and promote a seamless service within a multi-professional Framework

▪ Be involved in the biologics service:

 -Assisting with the Virtual Biologics Service ( Blueteq funding requests)

-Activating and renewing homecare prescriptions

-Assist with running nurse-led clinics – initiating monitoring patients on Biologics

-Rotation in day care unit for treating patients with IV biologics, IV bisphosphonates, Cyclophosphamide, methylprednisolone

-Assist with the Biologics help line queries. Epoprostenol,

 ▪ Assisting with nurse-led clinics for DMARD monitoring (s/c methotrexate/Leflunomide)

▪ Be involved in the research and audit of clinical activities taking into account directorate and corporate objectives within the clinical governance framework.

  • • Intravenous accreditation
  • • Cannulation
  • • Accreditation Fulfils KSF outline for Staff Nurse (Band 5)
Desirable criteria
  • • Prep for Mentorship course or equivalent
  • • Specialist Clinical Course relevant to area or equivalent.
  • • NMP qualification
  • • BSc Nursing or working towards

Experience

Essential criteria
  • • Cannulation and intravenous drug administration
Desirable criteria
  • • Experience of caring for patients with long term conditions

Skills

Essential criteria
  • • Can prove a basic computer literacy in Windows and IT systems
  • • Cannulation and phlebotomy skill
