Job overview

Barts Health NHS Trust is inviting applications for a 6 month Locum Consultant Urological Surgeon to join one of the largest and most dynamic NHS Trusts in England. This role will be central to the expansion of our Urology services across multiple sites, including Whipps Cross, The Royal London, and Newham University Hospitals, as well as the newly developed Community Diagnostics Centre (CDC) at Mile End Hospital.

The successful candidate will play a key role in delivering elective diagnostic services at the CDC, alongside providing non-elective (emergency) care at The Royal London Hospital and operative surgery across RLH and Whipps Cross Hospital. Additionally, the postholder will contribute to the stone and ESWL service at RLH, with the opportunity to develop a subspecialist interest in upper urinary tract robotic surgery and renal cancer diagnostics.

The CDC Service runs 8am – 8pm across 7 days, therefore your schedule will be based on these hours and days to support the effect running of the service.

Main duties of the job

Main Duties:

·         Provide general urological services, including ESWL and endo-urology.

·         Develop efficient urology pathways and enhance UIU capabilities and capacity.

·         Establish a subspecialist interest in upper urinary tract robotic surgery.

·         Lead and support a multidisciplinary team.

·         Participate in non-elective (emergency) care at The Royal London Hospital on a 1-in-8 Rota.

·         Perform operative surgery at The Royal London, Whipps Cross, and Newham hospitals.

·         Engage in regular audits, continuous professional development, and quality improvement initiatives.

·         Oversee the education and training of clinical staff, academic interests are encouraged and can be discussed with Professor Prabhakar Rajan.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MB BS, or equivalent
  • FRCS(Urology) or equivalent
  • CCST (or within 6 months of date of interview)
Desirable criteria
  • Higher Research Degree e.g MD or PhD

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Widespread broad based knowledge of all aspects of urological surgery

Management / Audit Experience

Essential criteria
  • Able to provide evidence of clinical audit and demonstrate understanding of impact and challenges this brings
  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge and awareness of current and future NHS challenges and strategy
  • Ability to support team members in business planning via collaboration and discussion
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of innovative approaches to healthcare
  • Experience of audit management

Academic Achievements/Research/Publications

Essential criteria
  • Ability to demonstrate personal experience of academic research and describe and discuss findings and impact
  • Experience of research, presentation to learned societies on topics related to surgery
  • Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical/surgical problems
  • Demonstrate number of first name publications in indexed journals, over a variety of subjects relevant to this post
Desirable criteria
  • PhD/ MD Thesis

Training Expected

  • Higher Specialist Training in Urological surgery
  • Experience in training undergraduates and postgraduates
  • Experience in general urology
  • Experience in Emergency Urology

  • Experience of Novel prostatic techniques
  • Experience in transperineal prostate biopsy
