An exciting opportunity has arisen to join a dynamic team, working with some of the most vulnerable patients with severe mental illness in Camden.

The post offered is that of a Consultant Psychiatrist in General Adult Psychiatry in the North Camden Recovery & Rehabilitation Team, a community mental health team that treats people with psychotic illnesses.

The North Camden Recovery Team is part of the care pathway for patients in HoNOS care clusters 11, 12 and 13, i.e., patients with psychotic illnesses. The care pathway applies the recovery model of care. It delivers evidence-based treatments to patients living in the Northern part of Camden. The post holder will work alongside another consultant. Jointly they will be the clinical leads for the team. The team is sub-divided into two mini-teams. There are approximately 800 service users on the caseload at any one time, with 400 patients in each mini team. Out of these, the post holder will have a medical-only out-patient caseload of approximately 250 patients shared with the Higher Trainee and Foundation Doctor Trainee – whose work they will supervise.

Main duties of the job

This is a substantive position for 10 Programmed Activities: 7.5 Direct Clinical Care and 2.5 Supporting Professional Activities.

The direct clinical care sessions will include: assessing new referrals to the team; reviewing patients and advising on their care; contributing to risk assessment and management; helping to manage crises; conducting medication reviews; participating in CPA reviews; and providing Consultant input into the team meetings.

The North Camden R&R Team is an innovative service with a strong focus on continuing service development, Quality Improvement, and conducting service evaluation and research. The post holder will be expected to support and contribute to these activities. The service is part of a wider programme in the trust aimed at reducing the health inequalities for people with severe mental illnesses.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The postholder will work 10 Programmed Activities  in the North Camden Recovery Team.

This team is part of the care pathway for patients in care clusters 11, 12 and 13, i.e. patients with psychotic illnesses. The care pathway applies the recovery model of care. It delivers evidence based treatments to patients living in the northern part of Camden. The team is sub-divided into two mini-teams and the post holder will work alongside two other substantive consultants. There are approximately 800 service users on the caseload at any one time, with 400 patients in each mini-team. The team is based at The Hoo, 17 Lyndhurst Gardens, London, NW3 5NU.The team operates between 9am-5pm Monday to Friday.

New patients are referred to the service by the Assessment and Advice Team, the Crisis Teams or the inpatients services. Sometimes GPs will refer directly to the team where patients have recently (within 6 months)  been discharged from the service.

The postholder will have Consultant responsibility, for one of the two mini teams within the team. The Consultants are the joint clinical leaders and will provide cross cover to each other when required. The postholder will work with the team manager to ensure excellent and safe care is provided to patients and that there are systems in place to supervise the clinical work of the team. They will participate in this supervision through the multidisciplinary team meetings. The postholder will review patients, usually at the request of the care co-ordinators, to advise on their care. Care co-ordinators will usually be present at reviews. The postholder will participate in CPA reviews as required.  In addition the postholder will undertake urgent assessments of patients already in the care of the team, who may be experiencing a deterioration in their mental health. Patients will usually be seen at the team base, at home or in GP surgeries. The postholder will ensure there are systems in place to monitor patients’ physical health, including monitoring that is required for antipsychotic drugs and lithium.

The community R&R  teams are part of the cross borough Camden & Islington Recovery & Rehabilitation Division, which includes a range of specialist psychosis services: Assertive Outreach Teams, Early Intervention Service, FOCUS homeless outreach service, Intensive Support Service and Re-ablement.  In-patient rehabilitation wards are based at St Pancras Hospital and the Highgate Mental Health Centre. The post holder will contribute to the leadership of the North Camden Recovery & Rehabilitation Team and to the division as a whole. Senior clinicians and managers from the division meet at a monthly Recovery Forum, to discuss clinical strategy, research and audit.

Person specification

Education/Qualifications/Registration

Essential criteria
  • Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) and a license to practice. Must be on the specialist register or within 6 months of gaining a Certificate of Completion of Training
  • Section 12(2) and Approved Clinician status (or eligibility) - qualifies to act as a Responsible Clinician
  • Registered with Royal College of Psychiatrists CPD programme and in good standing
  • Shared Services training up to date to be an approved trainer/clinical supervisor
Desirable criteria
  • Trained as an Educational Supervisor for doctors in training
  • Training as a Consultant mentor
  • Other relevant post-graduate qualification (incl. those gained outside UK
  • Membership of Royal College of Psychiatrists or equivalent higher qualification in psychiatry

Skills & Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Ability to be flexible and adaptable to change
  • Ability to effectively communicate ideas and influence others.
  • Good knowledge of and ability to use both spoken and written English
  • Ability to organise workload and manage time and delegate responsibility where appropriate
  • Ability to practise as an independent Consultant Psychiatrist
  • Teaching and supervision skills for undergraduate medical students, doctors in training and multi-professional staff
  • Ability to work in a team environment and to develop effective working relationships on an individual and multidisciplinary basis with all levels of staff.
  • Experience in undertaking clinical audit, investigating serious incidents and handling complaints

  • A special interest or willingness to develop one in an area which helps to meet the needs of the Trust
  • Experience in successfully delivering research projects

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge and observance of the requirements and duties of a doctor laid down by the GMC in Good Medical Practice.
  • Clinical knowledge of the full range mental disorders.
  • Experience in the assessment of complex clinical cases involving severe and enduring mental illness and significant risk histories and the ability to assertively engage and manage such cases. This will include experience working on acute Inpatient wards at senior trainee or Consultant level.
  • Knowledge of the Mental Health Act, Mental Capacity Act and safeguarding practices
  • Expertise in a comprehensive range of evidence based treatment and case management options including pharmacotherapy.
  • Experience in work-place based assessments of doctors in training
  • Knowledge of clinical commissioning and external organisations that interface with an NHS Trust.
  • Willingness to participate in research as appropriate and within the context of the duties of the post
  • Good understanding of Trust governance structures, especially clinical governance
