Job overview

We are seeking an experienced and strategic finance leader to join our team as Deputy Director of Finance – Complex Care. 

Reporting to the Director of Operational Finance, you will provide expert financial leadership, business partnering and decision support to the Complex Care division, CLCH senior management and West & North London ICB. You will lead financial planning, reporting and performance management across a complex portfolio, supporting service transformation, contract negotiations and the delivery of financial sustainability. 

As a senior member of both the Complex Care Management Team and the Senior Finance Team, you will help shape strategy, influence decision-making and support the delivery of high-quality services for the communities we serve. The role also includes deputising for the Director of Operational Finance and, where required, the Chief Finance Officer. 

We are looking for a CCAB-qualified accountant with substantial NHS or equivalent experience, strong leadership skills and a proven ability to build effective relationships and influence senior stakeholders.

Main duties of the job

  • Provide strategic financial leadership, advice and business partnering support to the Complex Care division, CLCH management and West & North London ICB.
  • Lead and develop the Complex Care Finance Team, promoting an inclusive and high-performing culture.
  • Oversee the production, review and ownership of financial and management reports, ensuring accuracy, quality and timely delivery.
  • Deliver financial analysis, insight and interpretation to support operational and strategic decision-making.
  • Lead the financial review of business cases, service developments, transformation programmes and cost improvement initiatives.
  • Support budgeting, forecasting, financial planning and performance management processes.
  • Work collaboratively with operational, clinical and commissioning colleagues to support organisational objectives.
  • Build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including NHS partners and system colleagues.
  • Support contract negotiations and system-wide financial planning activities.
  • Present complex financial information clearly to a range of audiences.
  • Deputise for the Director of Operational Finance and, when required, the Chief Finance Officer, representing the Trust at senior meetings and forums.
  • Contribute to Trust-wide financial strategy, governance and continuous improvement initiatives.

Education/Qualification

Essential criteria
  • Doctorate or equivalent / comparable level of experience in senior finance roles
  • Qualified CCAB with significant post qualification experience
  • Evidence of continuing professional development

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Senior finance experience in the NHS and / or commercial business environment
  • Extensive experience of Complex Care services
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team of all levels of the organisation
  • Experience in contract negotiations
  • Experience of supporting the management of large and complex budgets
  • Extensive experience of financial management at a senior level in the NHS
Desirable criteria
  • Mix of NHS, other public sector & private sector experience
  • Experience of working with senior Council staff
  • Experience of working in social care finance

Skills and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Ability to plan, prioritise and manage workload of self and others, working to tight deadlines
  • Ability to lead an effective and efficient finance team
  • Communicates effectively with excellent written, verbal and presentational skills to ensure highly complex issues are clear and understandable
  • Knowledge and understanding of the health and social care environment within the UK
  • Highly developed detailed specialised knowledge of NHS financial regime including NHS Operational Framework, Payment by Results, Code of Conduct etc
