A rare and exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Assistive Communication Service (ACS) at Central London Community Healthcare NHS Trust (CLCH) as a Band 6 Occupational Therapist, with a clear development pathway to Band 7 upon successful completion of a structured competency framework.
ACS is one of London’s designated specialist services for Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC). We provide comprehensive AAC assessments, equipment prescription, initial training, and setup for both adults and children with complex communication needs.
You will be part of a small, supportive multi-disciplinary team that includes Speech and Language Therapists, Therapy Technicians, and a Rehabilitation Engineer. Prior experience in AAC or Assistive Technology is not required—full training and ongoing support will be provided, including protected time for continuing professional development (CPD).

Main duties of the job
As part of the Assistive Communication Service (ACS), your responsibilities will include:
- Conducting uni-professional and multi-professional occupational therapy assessments and reviews using evidence-based outcome measures in a variety of settings, including clients’ homes, community locations, educational environments, and acute care settings.
- Applying clinical reasoning and a person-centred approach to support individuals with complex communication needs—for example, assessing for and implementing positioning solutions, mounting voice output communication aids, or identifying alternative access methods such as switches.
- Prescribing appropriate assistive equipment and providing training to clients, families, and carers on its safe and effective use, in line with ACS protocols and risk assessments, to enhance communication, independence, and participation.
- Collaborating closely with the multi-disciplinary ACS team—including Speech and Language Therapists, Therapy Technicians, and a Rehabilitation Engineer—as well as with referring community teams, to ensure a coordinated and holistic approach to care.
- Communicating clearly and sensitively with clients, families, and carers about complex conditions, assessments, interventions, and discharge planning.
- Engaging in ongoing professional development, including participation in training and supervision, with the opportunity to progress to a Band 7 role upon successful completion of the required competencies.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Diploma/degree in Occupational Therapy/or MSc Occupational Therapy
- Current HPC registration
- Evidence of CPD relevant to assessment and treatment of neurological conditions
Desirable criteria
- Other relevant post graduate degree
- Member of SSNP or other relevant special interest groups
Experience
Essential criteria
- Rotations at a Band 5 and Band 6 level in a wide range of clinical areas including neuro-rehabilitation, musculoskeletal, community and orthopaedics.
- Experience working within a multi-disciplinary team
- Experience working with Wheelchair and Specialist Seating Services.
Desirable criteria
- Experience in service development projects
- Experience working with voluntary organisations
Skills
Essential criteria
- Skills in the assessment and treatment of people with neurological conditions complex multi-pathologies.
- Ability to apply core occupational therapy skills across a range of clinical conditions within a client centred, goal setting approach
- Knowledge of outcome measures and evidence based practice associated with children/adults with complex neurological conditions
- Advanced communication and report writing skills, in both verbal and written format
- IT skills – Microsoft Word, Power point, Excel, Outlook
Desirable criteria
- Experience in MDT assessment of Alternative and Augmentative systems and wheelchair mounting of voice output communication aids.
