Consultant Psychiatrist in Older Adults Inpatients (Westminster)

We are looking for a dynamic Consultant psychiatrist to be part of a high calibre consultant peer group in the heart of London and to work in established older adults inpatient mental health services in Westminster.

This is a 10 PA substantive Consultant post in Older Adult Inpatient Psychiatry and is subject to annual job planning and appraisal. The post-holder will work with highly skilled and established multidisciplinary teams on Kershaw ward and 3, Beatrice Place. This post is a replacement consultant post.

We offer a range of development opportunities to build and expand consultant clinical and leadership portfolios both for newly qualified and established consultants (please see job description for further details). We welcome applications from candidates within 6 months of CCT and from international candidates.

Prif ddyletswyddau'r swydd

The post-holder's principal duties will be to provide Medical Leadership to patients admitted to Kershaw Ward and Beatrice Place Older Adults unit. He/she will act as the Responsible Clinician for any patients subject to the Mental Health Act. There are 14 acute beds and 6 continuing care beds covered by this post. There are two core trainees and a full-time specialty Doctor attached to this post. The post-holder will act as Clinical Supervisor for these doctors.

Both Kershaw and Beatrice Place have well-developed multidisciplinary teams that provide care for older adults. The MDTs are highly skilled and experienced in caring for people with frailty and/or cognitive impairment and mental health problems. They include nursing staff, health care assistants, occupational therapists, a psychologist and art-therapists. There is also regular access to a dietician, speech and language therapist and physiotherapists. The post holder will work closely with the matrons and other members of the MDT in both Kershaw and Beatrice Place to ensure that patients are provided with the highest standards of care.

  • Study budget of up to £1000/- per year for CPD purposes, part of which can also be used to obtain RCPsych CPD online subscription
  • Flexible and mobile working opportunities subject to agreement with the Westminster Clinical director

Main clinical duties:

  • Clinical leadership for the team
  • Clinical management of patients on Kershaw and Beatrice Place
  • Ward reviews, mental health act review tribunals and other work related to the Mental Health Act
  • Management of complex cases
  • Assessment of referrals/admissions
  • Care plan and treatment formulation within the trauma informed framework, guidance on evidence-based treatment and effectiveness
  • Liaison and collaborative working with other services/agencies
  • Ensuring that patient’s physical health needs are addressed
  • Review and monitoring of the caseload to ensure appropriate care packages are put in place and discharges facilitated to maintain patient flow

Leadership responsibilities and medical management:

  • Leadership role in line with the quality agenda: identifying areas for improvement and active engagement with QI and audit
  • Meet regularly with the team and local service managers to ensure quality, finance and performance targets are met
  • Line management and clinical supervision of post graduate medical trainees and specialty doctors in the team
  • Regular attendance in the monthly Borough Care Quality Meetings and team business meetings

Teaching and training

  • Post graduate psychiatry trainees and Foundation trainees have a clinical (CS) and educational supervisor (ES). The post holder is expected to become a CS and ES and will be supported as relevant
  • An active role in the postgraduate teaching programme, which consists of a local academic meeting at Wednesday lunchtime. This meeting includes a Journal Club and case presentations. This takes place at the St Charles hospital inpatient site and online
  • Teaching/training of medical students who regularly attend CMHT/wards as part of their psychiatry experience from the Imperial College School of medicine. Support is also given to work experience students and medical support workers where applicable

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Medical degree - MB BS or equivalent medical qualification
  • MRCPsych OR MRCPsych equivalent approved by the Royal College of Psychiatrists
  • CCT in older adults psychiatry or within 6 months of achieving CCT

  • Qualification or higher degree in medical education, clinical research or management
  • Relevant higher degree (e.g. MD, PhD, MSc or other additional clinical qualifications

ELIGIBILITY

  • Fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practise at the time of appointment
  • Included on the GMC Specialist Register OR within six months
  • Approved clinician status
  • Approved under S12

CLINICAL SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE

  • Experience of assessing and treating older adult patients in acute and community psychiatric settings
  • Experience in leading a multidisciplinary team
  • Excellent clinical skills using biopsycho-social perspective and wide medical knowledge
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English
  • Able to manage clinical complexity and uncertainty
  • Demonstrate the leadership skills required to function successfully as a Consultant Psychiatrist
  • IT skills relevant to working in a modern NHS environment
