General Adult Inpatient Consultant Psychiatrist at Tower Hamlets Centre for Mental Health (linked with Isle of Dogs Neighbourhood Mental Health Team)

This is a 10PAs position

12 Fixed Term Contact to cover paternity leave for one year.

The post is within a well-established acute psychiatric unit spread over two acute gender specific wards. The post is primarily aimed at offering inpatient care for patients for residents of the Isle of Dog geographical area (in Tower Hamlets) or for patients who are supported by the Isle of Dog neighbourhood mental health team (IoD NMHT). The appointed consultant would be offering clinical leadership and taking on the role as Responsible Clinician (RC) for patients. The consultant would be working with colleagues who take on similar role for the Stepney and Wapping area (and NMHT) and the Tower Hamlets Early Intervention for Psychosis Services (THEIS). These 3 services share the 2 acute inpatient wards; each ward has a capacity of 19 beds: Roman Ward for females and Lea Ward for males.

The current model separating clinical responsibilities for the community and inpatients was only adopted relatively recently during the pandemic. The post aims to maintain still strong links with the community team (IoD NMHT) and the post holder currently offers 2 sessions of clinical care in the community.

All work is undertaken in the context of the recovery approach, which is emphasised across the Trust, placing the service user at the centre of planning and decision making.  Good communication with the patient’s care coordinator and with the GP for the patient is essential.
