Job overview

The post holder will work in partnership with the Borough Lead Nurse (BLN) to ensure all aspects of nursing care are developed to a standard which provide the best possible outcome to service users at Tower Hamlets Mental Health Unit

The post holder will deputize for the BLN in their absence taking responsibility for the operational management of the service.

Main duties of the job

·         The post holder will work in partnership with the BLN to provide strategic nursing input at senior management level ensuring appropriate advice is provided to the Borough executive team so that effective, user-focussed mental health services and a high standard of nursing care can be delivered in the borough.

·         To manage the Matrons and provide visible nursing leadership to nurses within the Borough, offering professional and practice advice and support. Represent Borough nurses locally and in Trust wide forums.

·         To provide clinical and professional supervision to senior nurses within the Borough, ensuring that

standards of nursing advice are consistent, and that nursing developments are in accordance with strategy and Trust/Borough’s objectives.

·         To work in close collaboration with Service Managers, Heads of Profession, and external agencies, contributing to the planning and delivery of high-quality mental health services locally.

·         Work with the BLN to develop the most effective care pathways for service users through collaboration with the Community Services Manager, locality managers, matrons and other health care professionals.

·         Ensure that Safeguarding is fully embedded within the Inpatient service. 

·         To develop nurse-led initiatives regarding care programmes.

Education/ Qualification/Training

Essential criteria
  • Registered Mental Health Nurse
  • Completed Leadership Development Programme
Desirable criteria
  • Teaching/assessing qualification

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience at a senior management level
  • Partnership working with other statutory and voluntary agencies
  • Experience of working within an inpatient mental health service leading large teams
  • Experience of managing change and introducing new ways of working for mental health nurses
  • Experience of setting, monitoring and evaluating standards of care
  • Experience of managing a budget
  • Able to evidence ability to change practice, culture and outcomes of large nursing teams
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of presenting either at board level or to a wider external audience.
  • Experience of racial awareness/diversity training and the ability to operationalise this

Knowledge and Skills

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of Quality Improvement (QI) methodology
  • Ability to lead & inspire change & continuous improvement
  • Current policy context and the implications for mental health nursing
  • Demonstrate application of contemporary developments in mental health nursing
  • Evidence of the ability to analyse complex circumstances and use judgement to reach clear conclusions and decisions
  • Evidence of leading projects linked to Trust and Nursing priorities
Desirable criteria
  • Able to facilitate a high level debrief for staff
