Job overview

The Perinatal Mental Health Team is a mental health service for pregnant and postnatal women with severe and complex mental illness. The aim of the team is to detect, prevent and treat perinatal mental health problems to improve the experience of pregnancy and the postpartum period for women and their families. Women at risk of relapse following delivery are assessed early in pregnancy to allow them time to consider the treatment and support options available. The team works collaboratively with women, their families and other professionals, to plan care for pregnancy and the postpartum period.

 

Ideal candidate will have worked within community mental health services and have interest within neurodiversity. 

Main duties of the job

·         To manage a caseload with complex mental Health and neurodiversity needs

 

·         To work with patients to identify occupational therapy goals as part of the multi-disciplinary care plan, using specialist health & occupational therapy assessment tools & treatment techniques specific to perinatal occupational therapy

 

·         To plan & implement patient led individual and/or group interventions, using graded activity to achieve therapeutic goals

 

  • to be the allocated duty worker for the team a when assigned

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To manage a caseload with complex mental Health and neurodiversity needs

·         To work with patients to identify occupational therapy goals as part of the multi-disciplinary care plan, using specialist health & occupational therapy assessment tools & treatment techniques specific to perinatal occupational therapy

·         To work with patients in a variety of settings in order to provide the most effective assessment & interventions (home, community, children’s centres, other organisations)

·         To plan & implement patient led individual and/or group interventions, using graded activity to achieve therapeutic goals

Person specification

TRAINING & QUALIFICATIONS

Essential criteria
  • • Diploma/degree in OT
  • • UK HCPC Registration
  • • CPPD portfolio containing evidence of active involvement in CPPD activities
Desirable criteria
  • • Interest in under taking further relevant studies / training courses
  • • Fieldwork Educators training
  • • Willingness to learn and develop skills for research and clinical audit

EXPERIENCE

Essential criteria
  • • Experience which demonstrates competencies to meet the job description
  • • Applying and interpreting standardised OT assessments
  • • Clinical experience including individual and group work reflecting patient group
  • • Assessing and providing aids of daily living
  • • Experience of working in a multi-disciplinary team

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS

Essential criteria
  • • Ability to establish rapport with difficult to engage patients/carers
  • • Ability to build effective working relationships
  • • Effective written verbal and non-verbal communication skills.
  • • Ability to reflect and critically appraise own performance.
  • • Ability to work autonomously, set own priorities and manage time effectively
  • • Risk assessment and management skills
  • • Detailed knowledge of the principles of clinical quality and its application in practice
  • • Specialist knowledge and application of current best practice in OT in perinatal mental health
  • • Understanding of OT outcome measures.
  • • Computer literacy
  • • Detailed knowledge of mental health legislation and current practice.
  • • Knowledge of current Occupational Therapy literature, frames of reference and models of intervention.
  • • Awareness and acceptance of diversity.

EFFORT & ENVIRONMENT

  • • Ability to engage in physical activity groups and frequent community / home visits.
  • • Ability to meet the demands of a patient group with complex needs which requires a high level of concentration and an ability to adapt quickly to a variety of emotional/ physical situations.
