Job overview

We are looking for a dynamic and motivated Occupational Therapist to join us in Tower Hamlets community health services. Based in Tower Hamlets, the Band 5 occupational therapy rotation offers diverse experience across physical and mental health service and within social care. The rotation includes specialities across community services: community discharge to assess, rapid response and intermediate care team, community older adults’ mental health, inpatient adult mental health, Adult Social Care teams including initial assessment team, major adaptations, Housing/Lettings Services, joint health and social care teams reablement and community learning disabilities.

Main duties of the job

The occupational therapy service has an excellent Band 5 Occupational Therapist support program offering training and development meetings and continuing professional development activities. You will be supported in developing your OT skills and encouraged in your professional development from a large and supportive OT service renowned for its innovation. We value commitment to professional development, training and high quality clinical supervision for all our staff, some of whom have external teaching and lecturing responsibilities. Newly qualified OTs will be supported by preceptorship.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Rotations are 9 months in length. You will rotate across differing services and be supported to develop your skills to practice autonomously. The rotation provides the opportunity to work within both OT and multi-professional led services, across health and social care.  You will be expected to work within all legal and professional frameworks. The rotation has a monthly peer support group.

Education, Qualification and Training

Essential criteria
  • • Diploma or Degree in Occupational Therapy
  • • HCPC Registration, CRB clearance
  • • Evidence of CPD maintained in a portfolio

Other

Essential criteria
  • • Ability to work weekends when required
  • • Ability to navigate throughout the borough utilising relevant transport methods including; walking, cycling, use of public transport and/or driving
  • • Reliable work record
  • • Proficient use of MS programs and range of data bases

Experience

Essential criteria
  • • Experience of working with people in a health or social services environment
  • • Experience of working within a multidisciplinary and/or occupational therapy team
  • • Takes responsibility for self and others
  • • Knowledge of a broad range of clinical conditions
  • • Ability to effectively prioritise, manage time and organise self accordingly to demands of the role
  • • Ability to communicate and present information, orally and in writing, in a clear and logical manner to patients and carers who may have difficulties understanding or comprehending
  • • Understanding of the legal and ethical responsibilities of the profession
Desirable criteria
  • • Experience and understanding of working with people in a community setting

Skills and Knowledge

  • • Ability to carry out moderate to intense physical effort throughout the working day and manage competing demands and interruptions
  • • Ability to cope working in a range of treatment environments at a fast pace and with emotional and/or aggressive patients and carers
  • • Ability to assess and act against risks to self, therapy assistants, clients, as a consequence of exposure to clients and environments which may be highly distressing, antagonistic, open to aggression and/or unpleasant.
  • • Motivated, proactive and self-directed with an innovative approach.
  • • Ability to treat people with respect, irrespective of age, gender, culture, religion & sexuality
  • • Ability to effectively impart sensitive information and engage in difficult discussions where there may be barriers and/or challenges to understanding
  • • Knowledge and understanding of Health and Safety legislation and ability to integrate into clinical practice
