Applications are invited from experienced, flexible and motivated individuals for this Biomedical Scientist role, within the Cell Therapy Department at Great Ormond Street Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.
Great Ormond Street Hospital is a world class centre for blood and marrow transplantation of children with a wide range of malignant, haematological, immunological, metabolic and rheumatological conditions. In addition, it has a world class programme of translational research in gene and other cellular based therapies. The Cell Therapy Laboratory supports this clinical work by conducting a wide range of manipulations, including red cell depletion, cord blood washing, cell selection and depletion and storage of autologous haematopoietic stem cells. We provide support for a range of research and development projects and now support the Thymus Transplant Programme.
You will be trained in all aspects of the Cell Therapy Service. In addition, you will undertake assays important to monitoring the efficacy and safety of therapies in line with regulatory requirements.
You will have previous experience of working in a routine Diagnostic Laboratory, and knowledge of regulatory requirements in this specialist area. Please ensure that you read the attached Job Description and Person Specification carefully as your application will be judged against these criteria.
Main duties of the job
- To carry out laboratory investigations in CTL and Immunology sections as requested by the clinical services, taking responsibility for quality and accuracy of the results produced
- To carry out blood and marrow manipulations or other cellular therapies as directed within the cell therapy laboratory
- To contribute to the evaluation and implementation of new procedures and tests, including translational research
- Assist in the maintenance of a full quality management system for the cellular therapy laboratories, ensuring all allocated documents and audits are completed in a timely fashion.
- Assist in the quality assurance of the clean room laboratories, monitoring the environmental results and instigating actions in conjunction with QA pharmacy services
- Help to co-ordinate the booking of procedures within the Cellular Therapy laboratories, and ensure that staff are available
- Help identify unnecessary wastage and ways of improving the laboratory service
- To assist in the training of staff as required.
- To assist in the training of visiting personnel from other departments or trusts.
- To maintain a level of professional conduct as laid down by the Health Professional Council
- To ensure that the laboratory is a safe environment to work in, by following Trust guidelines

Experience/Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Experience in an accredited NHS laboratory.
- Experience of working with blood or human tissue.
- Scientific knowledge of laboratory procedures including the use of SOP’s and understanding of the safe effective use of equipment.
- Knowledge of Quality Management Systems and document control.
Desirable criteria
- Experience of working in a “cleanroom” environment.
- Experience of sample acquisition and processing on the flow cytometry.
Skills/Abilities
Essential criteria
- Good written and verbal communication skills, including clear handwriting
- Scientific and technical aptitude and ability to learn techniques quickly
- Organisational skills including the ability to prioritise work and the ability to work without supervision
- Able to supervise and train others.
- Experience in data handling

You must have appropriate UK professional registration.
