Specialist Biomedical Scientist – Microbiology & Virology (Fixed Term 1 year) Band 6
We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic HCPC registered
Biomedical Scientist in Microbiology and Virology to participate in the
Virology department’s diagnostic service, including serology, 16S pan-bacterial PCR, viral real-time PCR, Sanger sequencing and respiratory metagenomics.
This is an externally funded fixed term post for 12 months.
Candidates are expected to posses an understanding and experience PCR; experience of metagenomics, next-generation sequencing and/or 16S PCR and sequencing would be advantageous.
The department provides an extensive range of investigations to support the specialist patient population of this tertiary referral paediatric hospital, and also provides a specialist service to other hospitals. This is an excellent opportunity to work as part of an expanding molecular team in Microbiology and Virology.

laboratory
Main duties of the job
- To select and perform appropriate laboratory investigations on patient samples as requested by the clinical services or determined by a review of clinical details
- Take responsibility for the quality and accuracy of the results produced
- Enter and validate laboratory results produced by themselves or other laboratory staff members
- To validate ,authorise and report results of investigations, to interpret results to assist diagnosis
- To ensure that all results are reported within agreed turnaround time
- To report and discuss all quality and other issues with senior members of staff
- To work within and maintain ISO 15189 standards
- To work in a safe and effective manner, knowing correct procedures for handling hazardous substances within the laboratory, observing the Health and Safety at Work Act and the Laboratory Safety and COSHH records
- To assist in the training and supervision of Medical Laboratory assistants.
- To assist in the training of medical staff

- BSc (Hons) degree relevant Biomedical science
- Health and Care Professions Council registered as Biomedical Scientist
- IBMS Specialist Portfolio or Log book
Desirable criteria
- Evidence of continuing professional development
- MIBMS or equivalent
Experience/Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Knowledge of the day to day running of a diagnostic laboratory
- Experience of providing appropriate training to members of staff such as support staff
- Patient confidentiality and Data protection
- Practical experience in virology E A/I
- Experience with paediatric samples E A/I
Desirable criteria
- Knowledge or experience working and maintaining containment Level III Laboratory
- Experience using instruments such as – Liaison XL, QiaSymphony, Hamilton STAR, AltoStar, Quantstudios, ABI 7500
Skills/Abilities
Essential criteria
- Practical Laboratory experience
- Ability to work without supervision after training

You must have appropriate UK professional registration.
