Job overview
Great Ormond Street Hospital is seeking a passionate Ophthalmic Imaging Scientist to support groundbreaking paediatric research. This is a 24-month fixed-term role working in partnership with UCL’s Institute of Child Health. This is a unique opportunity to combine hands-on ophthalmic imaging with cutting-edge clinical research.
You'll deliver high-quality ophthalmic imaging and help coordinate clinical research studies focused on children with rare and complex conditions. Working within the UK’s only paediatric Biomedical Research Centre, you’ll collaborate with world-class clinicians, scientists, and researchers.
Key responsibilities include acquiring and interpreting ophthalmic images, maintaining accurate records, and assisting in study design and delivery, including contributing to the development of protocols and SOPs. You’ll contribute to research that drives real-world change in children’s healthcare.
We're looking for someone with experience in paediatric ophthalmic imaging, strong communication skills, and a keen interest in clinical research.
Applicants who are already registered as a Clinical Scientist with the Health & Care Professions Council on commencement of the post will be recruited as a Band 7 Clinical Scientist. If further training and experience is required, this role will be a Band 6 pre-registration scientist development role until the relevant competency (HCPC) has been achieved

Main duties of the job
- Work closely with scientists currently employed in GOSH Sight & Sound / UCL GOS ICH to develop and perform the ophthalmic imaging work for methods and standards that will ultimately lead to clinical services
- Provide timely information and reports to reflect recruitment of patients to research including timely entry to EDGE / CPMS according to team processes
- Obtain informed consent from participants in line with Trust policy and research protocol
- To participate in meetings with other members of staff, clinicians and staff from other scientific disciplines as required including an annual appraisal
- To maintain an up to date and comprehensive knowledge and understanding of relevant literature and service development
- To maintain a personal record of all training and development
- To follow established procedures and protocols

Essential criteria
- Degree in Biomedical sciences or related subject
- Appropriate Postgraduate Degree or relevant experience
- Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) Clinical Scientist Registration Certificate or relevant experience
Desirable criteria
- Knowledge of UK Policy Framework for Health & Social Care, International Conference on Harmonisation/Good Clinical Practice (ICH/GCP)
Skills/Abilities
Essential criteria
- Skilled in the acquisition of paediatric ophthalmic imaging across multiple modalities
- Familiar with anterior segment OCT image acquisition
- Able to establish and validate new tests including ability to troubleshoot. Willing to adapt to changes in methodology
- Computer literate, including management of imaging databases, and analytical software
- Able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing (by email and by appropriate documentation)
Desirable criteria
- Familiar with analysis of anterior segment OCT images
- Able to write standardised operating protocols
Experience/Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Demonstrable postgraduate experience in an ophthalmic imaging service
- Extensive knowledge of paediatric ophthalmic imaging and the techniques applied
Desirable criteria
- Previous involvement in ophthalmic clinical research
- Evidence of supervising/training other staff
