Job overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a fixed term maternity cover Band 6 Dietitian to support the highly specialised Feeding and Eating Disorder Paediatric Service in the Feeding and Eating Disorders Team and the Mildred Creak Unit (child and adolescent mental health inpatient unit - Tier 4).
You will work with and receive training and supervision with looking after children with a range of presentations. This will include Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorders (ARFID), generalised feeding disorders, Anorexia Nervosa and other mental health diagnoses. You will work in an MDT comprising psychology, psychiatry, mental health nurses, speech and language therapist, occupational therapist.
You will be responsible for the assessment and nutritional management of children referred as outpatients and those on the inpatient unit. You will also take part in delivering nutritional educational sessions to families and healthcare professionals
Main duties of the job
- Responsible for the provision of a comprehensive and quality dietetic FEDS service for both inpatients and outpatients working to agreed standards, policies and procedures
- Using specialised knowledge to manage a caseload in feeding and eating disorders
- Assessment of the patient’s needs and making clinical decisions regarding the necessary nutritional support and dietary interventions for all children in the caseload taking into account their diet history, growth and biochemical parameters and any relevant drug treatments
- Comparing normal nutritional requirements in childhood and interpreting these for the sick child according to the disease process to initiate and maintain a treatment plan
- attendance at ward rounds to take part in the decision-making about the patient’s clinical care.
- Responsible for maintenance of patient records to comply with departmental standards
- Communicating complex information regarding dietary management to the multidisciplinary team to provide a holistic approach to patient care.
- Communicating, both verbally and with written/pictorial resources, with patients and carers regarding dietary management taking into account their ability to understand and being sensitive to ethnic, cultural and religious diversity
- Organising and planning for discharge necessitating communication with the local healthcare multidisciplinary team eg GP, health visitor, community paediatric nurses, community paediatrician, dietitian adjusting short and long term careplans

- Degree in Nutrition and Dietetics or equivalent post-graduate qualification
- Registered as a Dietitian with the Health and Care Professions Council
Desirable criteria
- Post- graduate Paediatric Masters Modules (BDA/Uni of Plymouth)
Experience/Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Post-graduate experience in general dietetics
- Significant experience working in clinical paediatrics at band 6 level
Desirable criteria
- Experience in Feeding/Eating disorders
- Knowledge of a specialist area of paediatric dietetics
Skills/Abilities
Essential criteria
- Good communication and oral presentation and communication skills
- Time Management Skills
- Computer Literacy
- Ability to adapt to new ways of working which is beneficial to service
Desirable criteria
